CMDR Hek - Federal Midshipman
As news of the struggle for control of the empire bounces through the star systems on the GalNet News feed, foot notes about slave riots in Sorbago bring a smile to my lips. In my small corner of the Federation, the slave trade is alive and well. While I had to travel a good 40+ light years from the systems that were looking for them in order to acquire them, I am pleased to see that the overseer's appetites have only increased now that they have become aware that slaves are available. Stations that previously never offered slaves for sale now support a burgeoning market for them. I have to admit that I feel a bit of pride for establishing a new market, where one never existed before.
It is hard to deny the progress being made on various orbital platforms as a direct result of the increased availability of docile labor. Once remote, minimal stations are starting to thrive and expand as if they were along major trade routes. With a steady supply of minerals and metals, accompanied by a few select deliveries of technology and the occasional Federal package, commerce is booming.
I suppose it is only a matter of time before the Federation realizes that my activities are directly counter to their professed aversion to the slave trade. But the market does not lie. At roughly 11k a piece to acquire, and worth upwards of 20k+ to discerning buyers, there is hardly a more lucrative trade to be made right now. Though the investment in sedatives to keep them docile in the cargo holds is starting to add up, it seems a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.
While I feel a bit of guilt every time I launch my Cobra, knowing that it was paid for on the suffering of others, its re-enforced bulkheads give me comfort. I cannot help but wonder if the B class power plant and power distribution system do not hum that much more efficiently from being powered by the souls of indentured servitude.
