Throttle: Foward only or full range?

what do you guys think its best? with and without flight assist.

do you use full range or foward only with buttons for forward and backwards thrust?

My gaming background is combat flight sims and so throttles only make you go in one direction in my book. Backwards and forwards using a throttle.....burn them, burn them all !

I think it depends on what physical throttle you have. If you have one with a big range of movement and, critically, a detente in the middle then full range makes sense. I have a logitech extreme 3d pro joystick with a tiny little throttle and no mid point, so I use forward only and press a button to convert throttle to reverse throttle. (which I never use now I've mapped my thrusters to the numpad).

of course, my joystick also drifts the sjiop gently to one side so I do need to keep an eye on it in supercruise from time to time ;)

I started with it forward only but I've recently been trying full range and I'm actually quite liking it. Mine doesn't have a centre detent, which is a minor drawback, but the ability to reverse quickly is handy in close quarters and also for station manoeuvring. I've also got Voice Attack set up for throttle controls so it's easy to say 'all stop' if things get out of hand. :)

F.L.Y. 5 all in 1 and I use full range with a dead zone in the middle - it is just a matter of getting the dead zone right for yourself really.

Both of course, you can't be a good fighting pilot without the full range. You lose a whole bunch of maneuvering possibilities.

Full range. Finding I use reverse much less often than in PB1 but my x55 has such a long throttle travel I have plenty of fine control using only half the travel.

By the way, when using keyboard to throttle, is there any way to remove detent at 0? I really hate it, it constantly gets in the way.

Forward only because i have the habitat to setting the throttle to zero after parking an airplane the last 18 years.
I found me doing the same here every time in ED and this results in a full reverse throttle on launch making me slamming into the landing pad surroundings.
So forward only...

I started off using full range & I still use that with my 'backup' stick which has a relatively tiny throttle control & not many buttons.
For my x52 I've preferred forward only with a button to change thrust direction. Better for parking :)
If you've got the controls free try both & see how it feels..

I switched to forward only with my X52 as there was no good way to feel the middle point and the greater range now is better to adjust.
I also have set the forwad and backward thrust to my upper dial and in landing mode as an axis in override.
This works best for me.

I used to play full range but was alway having trouble getting to zero.

I switched to forward only and that problem went away, but it also turned out that I much prefer forward only - it feels 'right' to have the full motion control only your forward speed, and I also now really love having reverse bound to a key so I can slam into reverse easily. It seems to have added to the number of flight manouvers I can pull off

at the beginning i used "forward only".

switched to "full" when i got my Anaconda in B1 (you NEEDED it in this ship).
never gone back since then.

thats what im using too, i've also added a button for forward thrust since i dont need the button to reverse the throttle in my x55. i might try full range sometime. i was just wondering how people who play with flight assist off do it.

Full range, definitely. I have a TM warthog HOTAS, so it's quite precise. After some time I had no problem hitting 0% when needed, but the most important is that during combat, full range is much more intuitive. That's my feeling, anyway.
