Newcomer / Intro Throttle versus Thrust

Hey gang,

New to the game and trying to learn and get my HOTAS setup.
What is difference between throttle and thrust? I see I can assign both to an axis.

Thanks for any tips,

Thrust is push in a direction.

Throttle is - in effect - thrust but limited to keep you at a certain speed.

Just think of what throttle means. You are conceptually throttling fuel input to an amount that would keep you at a desired speed, where applying thrust would eventually bring you to max speed, even if you were applying it at a small level.

HOTAS should use throttle axes. You probably want to get basic skills down before needing thrust. Of course the mechanics are a tad specific to ED, where a "max speed" exists in the first place.

Think of it in three demention ... you have forward & reverse (via a set button) thrust via your throttle. Your up, down or side ways thrust you have to set up seperatly or find your default.

Oh and welcome to the ED Universe ...

For the F/A off flying it's actually beneficial to have the forward/retro thrust set, alongside with the standard lateral and vertical thrust.
Throttle in F/A off tend to be clumsy. But you need it for supercruise.

As said above, if you use HOTAS, you can leave thrust forward/backward axis empty and only set throttle axis.

Throttle is a variable speed adjustment, used for a motive force.

Thrust is a binary on/off in any of the 6 vectors up/down, left/right, forward/back, for fine control.

You can bind thrust to an axis, also. If you have enough axes...

Well, not quite binary. My vertical and lateral thrusters are set to analogue mini-stick so I can control the amount of each one.

Thanks for the info gang, guess eventually I will get my head wrapped around this.

I have a Warthog throttle, and I had assigned throttle to one of the axis and thrust to the other?

The terms thrust and thrusters can be confusing. I’ve got the warthog too, and I set the thrust (main engine throttle basically) to the throttle lever (I use the levers connected together just because I don’t want another axis at this point) set it to “full range” in the options and I use the little pinky button that’s on the left lever as my toggle between forward and reverse of the main engine. For my thrusters (fine movement left/right and up/down and yaw) in “normal space” i.e. not supercruise, I use the little hat switch that’s by my throttle hand index finger. I set the switch to match how I want to thrust, i.e. pull up to thrust up, push down to thrust down, and push left/right to thrust left/right. I use pedals for yaw, so you’ll have to find something comfortable for you. I’ve also set the hat switch that’s on the right side of the thrust levers to thrust forward/backwards just to give me an easy way to make minor movements without having to use the reverse button. Up/down and left/right would work on that switch too.

As a side note, when the countdown timer for approaching a station, planet, etc hits about 10 seconds, you can smoothly pull the throttle back to the lowest point that gives you a blue horizontal line on your speed indicator and it will give you a good 7 second approach speed (but of course gravity wells will change that). One nice thing if you do it this way is that you don’t have to make any changes if you’re interdicted. Just leave the throttle there and it gives you the best speed for maneuvering and then you’ll still be on a 7 second approach after you end the interdiction.

Hope this helps some and isn’t too confusing. Let me know if you have any questions on the throttle. It’s a good throttle for this game.
Regards.

Yes that does help me , thank you very much!
Gives me a basis to start with setting up my Warthog throttle for the thrust and throttle functions.

Well, not quite binary. My vertical and lateral thrusters are set to analogue mini-stick so I can control the amount of each one.

But they are still only on or off...you cannot set them to say a 50% downward thrust and hold that 50%...

Does this game support assigning a button as a modifier?
For instance, where I can assign a button on my stick as a press and hold modifier, to allow another command to be issued to a button press.

Yes you can, you are thinking digital instead of analogue. On high G worlds I set vertical thrust to analogue for precise control via alternate flight controls toggle. Every thruster on our ship can be assigned to an axis

Thanks! Never noticed the axis choice in the setup menu...always thought they were on/off choices only.

Sounds to me like OP is asking about the forward/reverse thrusters, vs the forward/reverse throttle.

You can set both of those to axes.
As noted above, I use the throttle for SC and most normal flight.
I use the thrusters for landing and FAoff.

Yep...my bad...never realized there was an axis setting..so only thought they were button activated!

Very coarse:

Throttle = analogue
Thrust = digital
CMDR Thrust = Bradford

Nope - I can. That's essential for anyone wanting to land on a high g world (outside of using a DC at a base). I'm using the little sticklet on the T16000 M throttle control for horizontal/vertical analogue thruster control = throttle (and the hat on the stick in landing override mode for digital thruster control = thrust). And I'd love to get a secondary throttle control for the main thrusters at least so I can use that floppy paddle for combat or scooping.

It can - I do this on my T16000 M with the button on my left ring finger as modifier switch. Just print out a refrence card and keep it handy if, like me, you use a modifier combo to trigger silent running but forget which one and then watch your ship heating up after you accidentally triggered it and can't remember how to switch it off again

If you want to know the unergonomic details:
- left ring finger is modifier
- left top hat switch down + modifier is landing gear (w/o the modifier, it's heat sink)
- left thumb button is boost, left thumb + modifier is silent running

And in case you need to know: left pinky is FA. Of course I have a completely different setup for the SRV. And I want to change that since at least a year ago (i.e. adapt the SRV to the ship setup), but usually find it easier to look up the ref sheet to check where I put the cargo scoop for the SRV....

Good to know thanks.
Can you give me a tip of where in the controller settings I assign a button as a modifier, or will it automatically recognize it when assigning?

I think I did it the easy way, i.e.

- select the control I want to assign in the controls menu
- press modifier
- press control
- release control
- release modifier

I believe the "release control" assigns the key combination - but it's been some time.
