Engineered thrusters are the most useful aside from FSD in my opinion. Speed and maneuverability are significantly improved. One some ships it's a total transformation. The Python for example. Even with A-rated it's a bit of a pig. However, put G5 Dirty Drags on it and it's like a different ship. But any ship will be better with engineered thrusters.

You also will need to decide whether to go Clean or Dirty. I use both. There was a thread recently in DD about this and the concensus was that Clean Drives are useless. I disagree and have my fleet mostly split between the two types.

I use clean drives on my exploration and hauling ships. They present a bit of an improvement over standard A-rated stuff and have other benefits (heat, power consumption,...)
When I am after raw power (on combat or courier-type ships) Dirty drives are a no-brainer. Although the power consumption and heat buildup can be difficult to counter. FOr example Imperial Eagle is awesome with G5 DDs, but it will cook you alive if you're not careful. :D

I think the consensus is based on general use, ignoring niche areas like exploration. Overall, DDs simply provide a larger increase than clean for a negligible increase in power/heat.

OP. As said, thrusters are arguably the most/second most important thing to engineer on a ship as the speed/agility increase is not only quite noticeable, but has a large impact on combat/trade/mining performance.
