I use a Cobra Mk III for everything except combat.

Just thinking, she's fast even with D-rates.

In my efforts to turn her into a Millennium Falcon-esque ship, then while I'll be using Dirty Drive for the thrusters obviously, will it be a good idea to use D-rates for the mod, to get that bit extra jump range afterwards? Seeing as I only run away as it is.

IMO - use A-grade. It will be a lot of fun. Judging by iClipper boosting 500m/s with A-grade thrusters and grade 3 dirty tuning with mediocre stats you should be able to have something like ~580m/s with A-grade, grade 5 upgrade and some luck.
FSD upgrade will give you more range than you currently have, even with heavier thrusters.
You can also try to save some weight by using smaller distributor with engine-focused modification. And if you are not trying to build cold-running ship smaller overcharged powerplant may help too.

I hadn't thought about the distributor mods. Thanks.

the drive mods reduce optimal mass of thrusters quite heavily. 4A have an optimal mass of 420T, 4D of 315T. with a class 3 dirty drive tuning u'll end up with aroud 280T optimal mass on your cobra, and mine does weight 290T without any bulkheads/... you'll most probably get a slight speed penalty before the optimal multiplier kicks in.

So- A-class thrusters it is. i personally plan on modding my cobras thrusters with clean drive tuning, because 500 m/s speed is enough for a smuggler/mission runner.

Stripped iCourier with Enhanced 3A drive will boost over 600 and cruise around 450.

NO mods.

you also can mod lightweight weapons - saves also some weight. i do this for my courier with enhanced thrusters.

I see what you mean. A-rates are a must.

Thanks. Better I know now.

I mean the Courier is great & all, but my heart is set on the Cobra.

that's fine ;-)

actually, the cobra is a very good 2.1. ships without any engineering. i sold most of my fleet now, but have parked 4 cobras in different spots where i need mission runners.

i decided not to mod any of them, till we have ship transport. instead i fly and mod my DBE. with a L5 thruster mod it gets nearby as fast as a stock cobra with d-class trusters...
