Thrusters in Combat

Im a newbie in combat and i dont know when to use thrusters lol. sorry. I just engage my target in a circle and i just keep on pitching up. Any tips for this newbie?

A bit difficult to explain, without drawing pictures, tbh, but maybe you could fire up the training mission in the asteriod belt and see how thrusters help you keeping a rock in your crosshairs?
I myself feel like what I'm doing with the thrusters is pretty random but I also feel like that it's helping nevertheless :)

With the sidewinder and eagle there isn't really anything wrong with doing that. Out pitch our target and try to stay behind them.

Thrusting up, down, left and right can allow you to angle the front of you ship to help aim. When going head to head with an enemy thrusting is crucial so you aren't an easy target, same goes for when some one is behind you.

You have 4 way thrusters - up, down, left, right.

If you are looping in a circle, going up - pushing the up thruster while going up will push your ship "up" as you go up, giving you a slightly steeper angle than you can manage without it - often getting a shot before the other guy can turn if they are maneuvering better than you are.

That's the easiest way I can describe it. The same works if you are looping left to use the thruster to move to the left.... So on and so forth. As you get a feel for using multiple powered direction controls, you will do a bit fancier stuff to better control the fight.

In the big fat ships, sliding Left while yawing Right (or vice versa) and then rotating and pitching makes it easier to keep the little buggers in front of you. That's mostly what I use the thrusters for, and they also seem to make you flip faster with flight assist off.

How important is Yaw? It seems the default configuration for the controller has Yaw mapped to the right stick, which I find useful sometimes but keep thinking I should change it to Left/Right thrust instead. I know it'd help more in docking, but I don;t really want to lose the Yaw. I suppose I could just map the Left/Right thrusters to a different set of button presses, but what is set already seems to be fairly important as well...

Also keep in mind that 50% throttle gives you maximum agility, keep it there when you are within range, faster when you need to catch up.
