Thrusters/Module failure procedures?

Greetings

So I lost a ship when the thrusters broke straight after my shield went down so no engines.As this had never happened to me before I panicked and didn't know what to do.I eventually tried to reboot/repair but nothing.

My questions:

Is it normal for a ship with high spec non engineered stuff to blow thrusters/engine as soon as the shield goes down?

What weapons could do that?

And what is the procedure for your thrusters/engine blowing up?

How do I avoid this happening again?
