Thrusters - undersized, right sized, oversized - what do you really get for a thruster's power requirement and mass ?
On the Anaconda, you really have quite a few thruster options, from size 5 to size 7.
I'd love to find out what the best compromise between speed, maneuverability and jump range is
My Conda weighs 587 tons empty and 1,067 tons with cargo.
Given that the A5 thrusters support an optimal weight of 840 tons and maximum weight of 1260 tons, I expected values that were not decreased from a 7D thruster when flying empty, but it seemed cargo didn't even figure, as I got the same lower speed either way.
So the 5A thrusters' main use is their benefit to jump range, but at a cost of loosing ~20 off the top speed with a 6D or 7D thruster and probably some maneuverability (?)
Jump range changes:
5A: 35.05 LY
6D: 35.28 LY
6A: 33.97 LY
7D: 34.40 LY
7A: 31.99 LY
5A: 182 / 232 m/s boost
6D: 189 / 252 m/s boost
6A: 209 / 278 m/s boost
7D: 191 / 254 m/s boost
7A: 211 / 280 m/s boost
What I found interesting is that the 7D basically offered no appreciable improvement over the 6D. Certainly nothing worth the 0.88 LY reduction in jump range, unless there's something else I didn't test yet, like turning speed.
Apparently, thrusters are handled similarly to shields by the game, where an over-sized shield won't do anything for you that a 'right sized' shield wouldn't match.
(see a very detailed shield generator testing thread from the beta forum for this)
If anyone has a more optimized jump range on their trading Conda, I'd love to hear about it ^^
