Thrusters when should they work

Hi I am new to ED and Vr. I am trying to play ED in Vr with oculus rift using Xbox one controller. I need to understand if you are not damaged should your thrusters work all the time by pressing r1 and r2 buttons. Do I need to have a target cited or is there something else I am missing. I just seem to get stuck in space not moving . I can pitch and yaw, fire guns but cannot move back and forwards. Am I missing something or are my r1 and r2 buttons not working very well. Please help it seems like an awesome game and I think I will spend days in ED if I can sort this problem out

I'd suggest checking your binding in options. I've seen a few different 'default' settings in different pics.

I think you're talking about your throttle. It generally makes you go forward and backwards, and you may need to press a button to go into reverse mode, depending on how the throttle is set up. You can use the throttle anytime you are not parked, but you can only go forward in super cruise. I think it's RB for faster and LB for slower.

You also have thrusters. I think the vertical thrusters are on your right stick, to go up and down while landing or also to jink when someone is shooting at you. You should also have thrusters for left/right and forward/backward (not the same as throttle), but you may need to assign those yourself. You can use thrusters anytime you are not parked and are not is super cruise.
