General / Off-Topic Thrustmaster HOTAS - lemon?

New to the new game. I played Elite for 100s of hours years ago (on a Commodore 128). I'm playing on an Xbox One.
I bought the Thrustmaster HOTAS for Xbox / PC.
The guide that came with it intimated that I could power on the Xbox, plug it in, and play.
Wellllll.

I have the luxury of access to 2 different Xbox Ones of different vintage and a Windows 10 PC.
Neither Xbox One will play with the joystick. Occasionally, I'll get 1 key press from the joystick before the Xbox stops listening to it. The throttle and stick have never caused an effect in the game.
The PC, when it was first plugged in, recognized it as what it was and said "it's ready to use." Since then, it won't recognize it and the game won't respond to it on the PC.

In fact, with the switch on PC the status light doesn't light. With the switch on Xbox, but plugged into the PC the light lights up but the computer doesn't respond to the device at all.

I feel I'm missing something simple. I'm having trouble just concluding "I got a lemon, return it."

Any help?

In Windows 8 or 10, open a search box and run joy.cpl with your T-Flight plugged in and set to PC mode. This is a controller diagnostic tool - if all the inputs are operating correctly it narrows down the problem and we can go from there.
If it's unresponsive, contact Thrustmaster

Ok, with the joystick set to PC and plugged into the Windows 10 PC I can turn the white LED on and off by pressing the Xbox home button. Running Joy.cpl does not do anything because the PC does not detect the joystick. I plugged a USB thumb drive into the USB port on the PC to see if the port was working. It instantly detects the thumb drive so the port works.

I went to the Thrustmaster site and downloaded the latest driver for PC and installed it. Even after that the PC doesn't react at all when the joystick is plugged in.

Am I at the point of seeking an exchange because the joystick is bad? This is maddening that a brand new product seems not to work and I'm still thinking that I am doing something wrong and this shouldn't be this hard. Any help is appreciated.

They are definitely plug and play, I haven't seen anyone with this issue before. I'd contact Thrustmaster for a replacement.
