Hardware & Technical Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS Controller - First Impressions

Plugged in the new T.16000M HOTAS on my system last night (Takes two USB ports). This HOTAS is officially supported by Frontier.

I loaded the driver file I got from their web site, but did not install the T.A.R.G.E.T. software. I booted up E: D and went into settings to find a selection for that specific HOTAS and selected it. Saw that the vast majority of controls were already mapped to the buttons and was ready to fly.

Except, I had been using a Logitech Extreme 3D joystick and Thrustmaster HOTAS X throttle combo, so the pre-mapped settings were not the way I wanted them. Spent an hour erasing the presets and re-entering the mappings I wanted. I kitted up an A-rated Sidewinder, went into Solo and launched to test it out. After thirty more minutes, I had it set up reasonably well. Some observations:

- There is no middle detent for neutral on the throttle like the HOTAS X. You need to designate a button to toggle reverse thrust. Throttle action is smooth and has just the right amount of resistance for me.

- The secondary fire button isn't on the thumb-rest like the HOTAS X, instead it is directly under and beneath the hat switch on the top of the joystick. That took some getting used too and isn't ergonomic. I was scanning wakes as a test and it's an awkward position to keep your thumb in all the time.

- The base of the joystick lights up whenever you move it. That can be distracting. You may be able to turn that off using T.A.R.G.E.T. software, but I wanted to keep the install as minimal as possible.

- The three throttle side switches all have four selections available. Up, down, forward and back, which is great for mapping options. However, I found it was easy to select two functions at the same time, if you pulled back or pushed forwards at the wrong angle. This happened multiple times, even when mapping the controls. Will take some getting used too.

- I have a wooden desk and both of the HOTAS units kept their place without screws or rubber pads. There was no movement or sliding across the surface of the desk, regardless of the violence of my maneuvers.

- Button placement on the throttle is PERFECT. Each falls under my fingertips or thumb exactly. The joystick shaft placement is OK. I think they missed an opportunity by not putting the secondary trigger on the thumbrest, but the top of the stick works well. The base of the joystick is a different matter. There are six buttons on each side of the base. Forward buttons have depressions, where rear buttons have braille style bumps to tell them apart. That is good, but the angle and placement of those buttons is at an unnatural angle and you have to hold your hand at a weird angle to cover them all with your fingertips. Without a VR headset, I had to look to place my fingers, orient my fingertips to the buttons, then was able to click them. Took way too long and in VR would take even longer. Time spent finding a control in combat is death. As a result, I ended up not using those buttons for anything except ship lights. If I do use them in the future, it will be for non-combat related functions.

- Retail price is $129.99. I paid $156 (with shipping and duty to Bermuda). I feel it was good value for money and is a quality item. Build quality was good with consistent seams, no rough edges and a smooth finish. The joystick shaft is shaped for a hand and feels natural. There are a few little issues as noted above, but after roughly two hours of setting it up and testing, it's starting to feel comfortable. I haven't used it in an SRV yet, but plan on doing that tonight to get the controls set.

If it were not for the strange button placement on the base and secondary fire button location, I'd give this 5 out of 5. However, I'm going to rate it at 4 out of 5 because of those things. It is still better then the HOTAS X I used to run IMHO and YMMV. Will use the HOTAS for at least twenty more hours and add further commentary later. I just wanted to give a first impressions review for anyone considering this product.

Good review, I'm about 50 hrs into using this product and second your observations. The slightly inconvenient button position on the throttles is an issue at first but you do get used to it.

Presently though I am working on some 3D printed button caps for both the throttle and the stick to make this product much more ergonomic and easier to use. In a short while I'll post these up in a separate thread.

With the use of a modifier key on the throttle I have found there are more than enough buttons for pure combat but i still need to use my keyboard for some other functions. I'll post my profile up when I am at my other PC!

Bindings - http://www.mcdee.net/elite/binds/jdvwkg

I'd also recommend NOT loading the TARGET software. I did once and it's just not user friendly IMO.
However if like me you really need curves (because YAW response for some ships is OTT) I use this: http://www.xedocproject.com/joystickcurves.html

Note: Akthough the HOTAS-X works with the Headsoft driver however I could not get the T.16000m to work with this driver and needed to use the 2nd Driver authored by Shaul Eizikovich.

Are any of hat-switches on the throttle Analogue (like an xbox stick) or an 8 way switch?

I have two Thrustmaster T.16000M and Pro Pedals. The joystick is lovely. I use the left stick for verticle & horizontal thrust, the pedals for forward/reverse thrust (toe breaks for boost and landing gear). Right twist is yaw, left twist is look left/right.

Easily mapped all elite functions to both sticks.

Great investment even if you are just going with a single stick.

Thanks for the review. Definitely considering adding the throttle to my T16000 joystick at some point this year.

The led in joystick base really annoyed me. There are instructions out there to open it up and snip the cable to the led. It's pretty straightforward, I seem to recall, if slightly nerve-racking. :)

Weird, I just started using one yesterday myself! I've never used a HOTAS before, though, so it seemed ungainly; I decided I'm going to do it in steps, just start using the joystick in order to get a feel for that while keeping using my Tartarus, and then replace the Tartarus with the HOTAS once I'm comfortable with the joystick.

Interesting, I wound up making almost the same bindings for my joystick. Primary difference is that I reserved secondary fire and targetting; maybe I'll try your way and see if that feels a bit more natural. I also have the firegroup cycling bound to the directional on top of the joystick, since I don't have the HOTAS to use for a modifier switch yet.

I had to open the 16000M and cut a wire to stop the *** light going on and off.

Using Logitech Extreme 3D Pro right now and a CH Pro Throttle when needed.

On the throttle, under the index finger, is a multi-direction hat. It has at least four directions and feels analog to me. I mapped my up - down, left - right thrusters to it and use it on landings.

I have used this hotas setup for several months now and am quite happy with it. Issues with the joystick are mostly caused by the fact it is meant as a standalone ambidextrous stick - the ambidextrity is wasted when used as part of a hotas set and it makes a lot of the buttons difficult to use. I also did the "mod" to cut one wire powering the LEDs - they were way too distracting while playing Elite at night.
The throttle is awesome, has a lot of buttons and one of the "hats" is analog 2 axis controller.

Has anyone found a good way to map SRV throttle? I found the full range forward only control good for flying (I have a separate axis mapped to reverse thrust) but awkward for driving. There doesn't seem to be a way to map throttle lever for forward movement and a separate button / axis for reverse.

The hats are all digital, but there is an analogue stick (which also has a button press) on the front of the throttle, basically under the index finger.

I use that for vertical and lateral thrust, although I needed to set a deadzone in the game controls for that to work reliably.

I've always used the T16000.M for ED and it works well.
Will give the HOTAS version a try whenever Amazon gets it back in stock.
Unless I have bad timing in looking it has been out of stock for months.

EDIT: Hehe. Clicked the above link and I see its in stock. Finally...

ftx for 1k hours and went for this new hotas when it came out 200 hours in i still wish i had a full range throttle with a dent, its a good setup but i wish a lot of things wher different and improvements. good price though

I just ordered the Throttle from this set, to pair with a Logitech 3D Pro. The Thrustmaster stick included doesn't have the button number, or placement I would like, so I will give the throttle a try.

I have this FCS system, too. It's pretty great. If you're coming from a HOTAS-X, the stick and throttle in this package will give you a ton more fine control. It's a thing of beauty.

I have been using the throttle since Christmas and the stick a few months longer. I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Also, I use the throttle in full range. I just put a small deadzone for it in elite's menu settings to find zero easier (same with the analog stick on the throttle that I use for thrusters). I considered putting a small velcro strip where the throttle would hit center, but I've found it isn't necessary after using it for a while. It's an idea if you are really missing the detent, though.

I've had an x55 with a warranty replacement to an x56. I love the x56 stick. Love it. The throttle was mixed. I loved the button placement but it took two hands to move the darn thing until it loosened a bit... which would be for about 5 minutes. Then there were the constant ghost fires. Last week I gave up and I've just swapped to the T1600 throttle and kept the x56 stick.

I've got the thrusters on the analague hat under the index finger but find it extremely imprecise. I would also prefer the button (for boost) and the next hat up to be swapped so that my thumb naturally rests on the boost.

Where do you have your thrust mapped? It's only been a week and I know I have 18 months of x56 muscle memory to overcome but I guess I'm wondering if it that is the only issue. It is a really nice throttle otherwise.

PS I have the throttle set to full range. Use the ED options to add a small deadzone on the axis and it will be fine.

I had a Logitech 3D Pro with my HOTAS X throttle and you will not be disappointed. Excellent joystick with buttons in just the right place. If I were to do this again, I would just get the throttle and keep the Logitech joy.

I respect a HOTAS, but my console breeding means I'm more competitive with a gamepad.

Thank you Speedlink Quinox... :)
