Thrustmaster T.16000M or Xbox One controller +DK2

I have just been granted access to the gamma and have tried using an Xbox One controller with my DK2. I find it a little sluggish but I appear to be able to do most things without peaking at the keyboard. I don't want to spend £130 getting an X52 setup but am happy to spend £30 on a Thrustmaster T.16000M which appears to be widely recommended as the "budget" stick to go for for E:D.

My questions are:

Can you play E:D on DK2 with only the T.16000M (and some control remapping) or will I still need to access my keyboard?

Is the Thrustmaster T.16000M more responsive/better in other ways than console controllers such as the Xbox One controller I am currently using?

Thanks!

I use a T16000m with my dk2 wokrs very well for what you could call a cheapish jotstick compaired to some , but I use a ch throttle, which I find is excellent

Unfortunately the CH Thottle is £130 in the UK - same price as the whole of the X52 Pro set up so not an option.

Did you ever play ED with only the T.16000M?

Personally I'd recommend getting VoiceAttack over a new peripheral first, assuming you already have a decent microphone, preferably headset/directional to avoid picking up speech from the game. At just $8 ( there is a demo for testing it out first though) its far cheaper and frankly if it works for you ( not sure how well it works or if it works at all with languages other than English), it is far superior to any other option. It takes a little while to set up (training) and to create mappings (speech to buttons) , though there is a thread on the forums where people post their versions that can help.

I started with an xbox controller and voice attack and was able to pretty much do everything I needed with that combination and never touched the keyboard. I've recently just switched to a X55 Rhino and although it has a huge amount of buttons and switches I'm actually finding it harder to play with and I much prefer using voice commands than trying to find switches (e.g. things like deploying landing gear, turning on lights, activating hyperjump etc). The thing I really miss from the xbox is the second analogue stick assigned to lateral thrusters. The X55 only has digital hats (ignoring the useless mouse nipple thing) and its just not as responsive and already lead to me crashing into the space station 3 times, which I never did on the xbox controller!

In the end I suspect VoiceAttack + xbox or VoiceAttack + T.16000M will be a good combination.

Just make sure you assign a enable/disable key to voiceAttack so things like this don't happen 'Dangers of voice commands' ;)

Sorry about your ship, but that was hilarious.
+1 for using voice attack with a flightstick. It's a very handy way to make up for the lack of buttons and is fun to use. Test out the free version with your xbox to see if you like it, then get the T.16000M if you want. I did find a flightstick has much finer control for flying vs a gamepad.

Just to be clear that isn't me, not sure who it is, but found the link a few times when searching for voice attack stuff. It is very sad, yet also very funny too ;)

I treat it more as a PSA though, warning of the dangers of voice commands and is why I took the time to set up my X55 Rhino 'slider' button to 'hold down right ctrl' key which I then use in VA to enable it and in Elite to Mute the microphone. Makes it very easy to enable/disable VA and at the same time to the opposite for the Elite Microphone (though not tried using it). Only problem with using Right Ctrl is that pressing escape (at least in win 8.1) will effectively alt-tab to the metro start interface.
