ow boy, so cool..

though, i have no clue how to use it when im lying down on the couch, with my feet up... lol

Still, i will buy one.. if i use it, i will see later.

Any idea how easy the UI will be using the HOTAS, or would you switch back to Xbone controller for menu navigation I wonder.....

Well xbox does have the co-pilot setting where you can use 2 controllers for the same game so maybe hotas and controller for menus?

As impressive & tempting as this forthcoming new HOTAS controller is, I can only find myself wondering how the heck I would make good use of it when seated with legs crossed or legs stretched out on the sofa. Same as:

"though, i have no clue how to use it when im lying down on the couch, with my feet up... lol"

It would mean having to use a little TV dinner tray or something similar on my lap which isn't really a route I'd like to take. Wouldn't be ergonomic, create RSI, arm & elbow fatigue, etc. I'd only be able to use it with flight type games, I only currently have ED fit into that nutshell. I don't have room in my home for a dedicated ED only setup, or a custom built cockpit/gaming chair type affair (which are indeed very cool) like some of the PC players have made bespoke.

I'm really unsure if the outlay of around £70 for a specific device for a single title & which probably won't get used much, is worth it? The inputs are fixed, no customisation, and looking at the hand grip it is of a considerable physical size. I've recently bought the M$ Elite controller for ED. Which also gives me RSI due to it's increased weight.

Really, really on the fence with this. :| Would like to know the weight of the device. Does it have suction cups or little rubber feet, are there any trim adjustments? For the £70 price tag, how is the build quality? Will it start to drift after a year or so's use? How long is the cable? & many other questions.

The last flight stick I had was an old serial port device for X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, (showing my age a bit there) ended up selling it eventually, with the game. That was around £40-50 back in the mid late 90's. It rarely got used.

With that being said I'll probably end up with one getting dusty in the corner. Wondering why on earth I bought it. Heh.

When another CMDR has one I'd really welcome a mini review, please.

Dont forget Microsoft announced full keyboard support for games as well. ;)

Keyboards already work to navigate menus

Yeah I'll definitely have a keyboard setup in between :) I just wanted some extra buttons on the actual HOTAS for things like chaff and heatsinks. But it looks like binding them will still make them easy to use. The pips will most likely be easier to assign (still terrible at it, even with CQC and training mission practice), but will still vocalize for a actual macro of pip distribution until I get easy mode lol.

Menus work fine from the HOTAS, same as they do on a controller. It's done exactly the same way, via a context button. Mine is pinky trigger + L/R or U/D on the primary hat switch (Just like X+D-pad) to access the UI focus function in the cockpit. Secondary hat (like L/R shoulder buttons) to select main menu functions, Primary hat scrolls sub menu options (D-Pad) and the select target button (A button on a controller) accesses and selects options in the station or UI menus, not much different from an Xbox controller to be honest.

I have an X52 pro-flight HOTAS but the UI function works on all input methods. You won't need an additional keyboard just for the menus. The only keys I use are 'G' and 'H' which I've bound to galaxy and system maps...only through pure laziness since I couldn't be bothered assigning HOTAS buttons. I use the mouse once I'm in the station menus and maps purely for speed and accuracy...but everything works from the HOTAS with basic default button mappings.

In the cockpit outside of menus, the primary hat switch is for pip management (D-Pad again) The main difference between a HOTAS and a controller is having more buttons and switches for things like chaff/landing gear/heatsinks/SCB's and instant, mechanical throttle and thruster control...but it's all quite intuitive after using a controller and doesn't need over complicating by adding keyboard commands or macros.

You also have a mode switch on a HOTAS to set up additional and completely different button/control mappings to the same buttons with the simple press of a button which is effectively setting up macros (similar to the mode switch on an Xbox Elite controller)... it's a rotary thumb switch in my case ... so you can effectively have a standard flight mode, landing mode, combat mode...any mode you want already pre-mapped... although I find that too confusing and pernickety to bother with, simplicity and ease of use being the key here.

The UI/controls team at FDev have achieved effective simplicity across the board with the control and input mappings on multiple platforms, controllers and HOTAS rigs...they certainly don't get enough credit for what they've done. I notice it more having switched from Xbox and controller to PC and HOTAS after flying E-D for 2 years on the Xbox... and yet I still have a simple and intuitive control setup on the PC that doesn't reduce me to n00b levels relearning how things work and how a ship flies.

Top job FDev [up]

Looks a great bit of kit and I have ordered one.
But the big disappointment for me is that it does not have a headset jack like the std controllers(unless anyone knows different)
So that means to chat the std controller has to be on with headset plugged in, and you just know it is going to shut off every 15mins.
And I know you can get wireless headsets now,but have you seen the price of them!

How do you look around your cockpit with HOTAS? Is the XBOX one X going to have VR?

HOTAS and VR to look around, doubtful I would ever leave my house lol.

My mistake saw the head look toggle after I posted this 😞

Wow, HOTAS, looks cool. I want one, but I doubt I will use It often. I do a lot of 20-30min sessions where I just sit on the floor or couch. I only set up my Playchair for the longer sessions. So my question: can I save a HOTAS and a Controller setup parallel? If not, HOTAS will be not for me.

This came from the ingame assets, so there are graphics for the standard and alternate flight controls for the standard controller for which there are distinct profiles within the set up options for you to choose the bindings I presume this is going to work in much the same way with a profile you can set....I haven't dug around in there much yet to confirm. I presume this is going to be a usb device so maybe the profile selection will only kick in when it's detected ?

It should work as the PS4 version on ED,which allows both controllers to be used.
I think the HOTAS has to be the primary and controller secondary.
You have to be able to use both or you will not be able to use a headset.

I have a wireless headset so I don't stress that, but yeah, it should be a option, but if you have a cable control device who cares about a cable more to plug in a wired headset? They are a lot cheaper than the wireless ones.

I would imagine the new T-Flight will have a 3.5mm jack for the headset... or an additional bit of kit from Microsoft like the headset controller from Turtle Beach to add on to the older mini USB Xbox controllers. The current PS/PC version of the T-Flight didn't require one when it was made since it was primarily a PC HOTAS with added Playstation functionality via drivers and a piddly mode switch on the back.

It would be a pretty big oversight if Thrustmaster along with Microsoft didn't think of adding one.
