Not having delved too deeply into this in the past, I wondered idly this morning if life-support module class might have any correlation to canopy strength. This came to mind because I've occasionally begun picking a hybrid Chieftain or Challenger for PvP dueling, and I've noticed that my canopy begins to crack (and occasionally fail) much more often than I've seen in some of the other ships I fly.
The vet's in here are probably already scoffing, because they've known the answer for some time: No. The canopy has its own integrity, separate from the life support system. For better or worse, life support support module class ONLY affects the amount of oxygen your remlock stores.
This can be verified (for those still learning things about this game, as I am) in the systems (right) panel, under modules / information. Changing out the life support class changes that module's integrity, but does not change the canopy's integrity.
A ship's canopy integrity is a function of the base ship design.
Of course, canopies can be repaired now ...but reboot/repair is really no more an option (in most cases) in a PvP duel than synthesizing ammo is (nor are many interested in giving up a module slot in a medium-frame ship for an AFMU, either).
Fun (stupid!) fact: The Challenger (a dedicated "combat" ship) has a canopy integrity of only 30. Yet the small-frame, non-combat Diamondback Explorer has a canopy strength of 50! While I suspect that this might be a legacy from a time when canopies could not be repaired and exploration vessels needed sturdiness there for long trips into the black, that still seems a bit silly. One must wonder what those supposed brainiacs in the Alliance ship design committee were thinking?!
Anyhow, since canopies are now called out as separate "modules" in the ship's system panel, perhaps it's time some renegade soul figured out a way to engineer them for more durability.
Or would that just exacerbate the already existent "hit point inflation" problem?
