Time for small pad only stations?

Hi guys. I've been thinking about this a lot since last night's mega mission that saw me shift over 300t cargo in my Cobra, solo.

Now that all cargo missions have a depot, is it time for Frontier to add stations that only allow small pad ships to land?

The reason I think such a concept would now be acceptable is that there's no risk of "Cobra Mk IV only missions", much like the current outposts had Python-only missions before the addition of the depot.

The reason this would have been a concern was because it would quite rightly be defined as P2W. This is no longer an issue with the new depot. Technically, a stock Sidewinder can complete a job asking for 240t cargo.

Adding small pad only stations would give veteran CMDRs a reason to keep at least one small ship.

This in turn might increase player ship variety, which is only a good thing.

Thoughts?

I've often wondered if the original plan was to have stations for small ships only, and the idea was postponed for lack of time or budget, then never made its way far enough up the list of priorities to get done.

It would be nice to have some reason - small stations with Rares or other unique commodities, perhaps mission-only - for players with Cutters and the like to get back into the small ships.

Exactly.

As it stands there is simply no reason to own a small ship other than for the sake of having one, as the mediums do everything better.

It would be nice if there were small stations on the border systems that can only afford to manage smaller vessels. This would give genuine reason to own a small ship.

I don't see any reason not to, as long as it doesn't lock any current content behind the new requirement.

Also the MkIV is the superior ship.

Didn't one of the developers a few years ago state that the Cobra Mk III was one of the most popular ships in the game? I think "no reason" is a bit of a broad brush, the small ships may not make the best haulers but they are pretty good at plenty of other tasks, even if they aren't the best at everything, or even anything.

I see the point of having small ship content,
that was done in other games a bit different:

Phenomena, or like in some games set in the 18th
century they simply had shallow coast areas where larger
ships simply were not able to be used.
That was a good way to give smaller ships purpose.
Small only landing pads, dunno maybe for research labs?

Still stations and installations need to be supplied,
and small ships cannot bring that much with them.
Need to do the math on that.

No there is no reason to try and force people to fly certain ships. In fact outpost should have large pads by now.
I love flying small ships. Pulling small ships out at RES sites is a hoot, among other uses I have for them.
No one is ever forced to fly certain ships.
In fact. Outposts should never have large pads.

On the other side of this idea. I'd like Frontier to give us the ability to doc small ships to large ships and load and unload!

They could make it cost a class 5 slot or maybe a huge hard point or something.

Maybe the Panther Clipper will have small ship only bay when I finally comes!

I'm all for stations with small only pads... but I'd also like to see fighters able to be used as shuttles to interact with those stations (and outposts) just to add more variety to things.

LOL Never stopped anyone else from demanding unreal expectations. Any station you dock at has a reserved spot with Un1k0rn stamped on the pad.
I've seen stations where 30 or more pads have Un1k0rn stamped on them. I get the feeling he's going round the galaxy tagging them.
