Time taken to plot 100ly jump

uhm ive got an i7 4770K @ 4.5ghz and 2x280X crossfire - SSD 100ly route takes abt 30 secs from opening galaxy map. u need to let the white routes calculate..

I play on an SSD, but surprised that would matter. It is literally instantaneous for me always - takes just a tiny fraction of a second. Didn't know this was an issue, to be honest. If it's client/CPU driven then perhaps it's the 4.5Ghz OCd CPU that's working its magic? Not sure.

Sounds like an SSD makes a fair bit of difference....incidentally gents would you mind sharing what memory you're running on your rigs? Just curious if the SSD is a red herring if you're running with something like 32 GB of DDR3 in there :)

I have noticed it's quicker on my desktop than my laptop which leads me to believe that it's definitely generated on the client side as my desktop is much higher spec'd

It is not based on CPU speed I think. I have a 5ghz eight-core processor. So that definitely is not the issue. However my GTX 780 Ti died on me last weekend and I have been playing with a 520 since. :(

So it could also do with the graphics or SSD. I do not have either of those at the moment.

Your tiny CPU won't help against long routes, there is a limit somewhere. And those calculations run in memory, you can't do this with slow SSDs. It's just mathematics...exponential growth of calculation time, beats any supercomputer ever built.

Normally takes less than two minutes to fully populate a 100ly jump for me.
It's mainly CPU horsepower that's needed as that's what is calculating the desired route through the possible routes.

Having an SSD will only improve disk read speed, and thinking about it not all of the 400 billion systems will be in memory but I think that the cube that you see on the screen when you zoom out must all be loaded in memory, so as long as you have the systems stored in memory and the two endpoints and the route between exist in memory then having an SSD shouldn't affect things at that point as it will all be done on the CPU from the memory.

The reason that it seems quick for some people is because the game is pre-computing all routes, so if you leave the galaxy map open for 5 mins then come back and plot a destination then you'll get it almost instantly.

I think that the biggest factor will be the amount of memory you have (if it intelligently uses the memory available to pre-compute and stops when it gets close to running out). The speed of your memory and the speed of your CPU.

It is literally instant for me. I have a SSD but I doubt that has anything to do with it. Its probably CPU, and mines nothing special.
