Hardware & Technical Time to upgrade the old HOTAS!

Hey, Commanders! Need some advice. My old reliable X-52 Pro is starting to show its age. So, time for an upgrade! Just wanted to get some thoughts/ideas on a new HOTAS from the community!

I've been considering the new X-56 Rhino. Been reading some reviews, and hearing good things. Plus, the price is right. However, I've also been drooling over the Thrustmaster Warthog, and I've been reading up on the new stick Saitek is working on for Star Citizen and wishing Frontier would call Thrustmaster to do the same for Elite [haha].

So I thought I would get some ideas from you guys in the community. Not considering cost just yet, just looking for the right balance of control for playing Elite. I also don't need to consider other games, ED is the only sim type game I play.

Anyone have an X-56 and want to talk about it? What about the "sticktion" issue I've read about the Warthog? Thanks in advance, and let the opinions commence!

im in the same boat, and with the same predicament....

Im holding off on the x56 till I see more reviews on the logitech restickering.....atm there just rebranded old seitek/mafcatz ones....but ive heard they have gone back through quality control and resealed.

I disabled yaw on my current hotas, to see if I could survive with pov hat doing yaw plus yaw on roll etc.....i found I could, so warthog is still on the cards, without pedals, as my seating is reclined my feet are not on the floor, so pedals are a no go.

the x56 is still my preferred option, but if reviews come jan sales say its still crap ill go warthog.

The t16000 i ruled out as it ugly and plasticy
the x52/x55 tempting, but same issues as x56 and id always have wished id gone x56
t.flight - current stick...nice to start with, cheap
ch .... yuk no

there are 2 sets of reviews id like to see...
first is the re branded under logitech but made by madcatz..... I suspect these will still be bad
second is the batch from logitech made and qa'd by them......hopefully with a new supplier of springs for the yaw lol

I hope Logitech is good news for the X56. If it has good QA, then it's my dream VR stick.

I have Logitech x56, arrived Tuesday. Just getting used to it. Like it a lot. Buttons are placed in very handy places. Throttle felt stiff, so loosened it with the dial. Dial didn't feel all that solid, seemed to wiggle rather than spin, wound it all the way back to lightest setting, now feels acceptable throttle friction. Having all those switches to hand is going to be extremely useful, I am however back at square one with pilot skills (not that far a step back lol).

Had to tune the deadspot on the stick twist as it just seemed too easy to yaw. Fairly simple to arrange in the software, issue now resolved.

Some of the buttons are really noisy to press. Getting up for an early flight at the weekend might be problematic with the loud clicking. Not impressed with that, doesn't feel premium. Also the noise between the centring-spring and the stick at the limits of movement is pretty loud too. Apparently a spot of grease can fix this so I'll have to look in to that - don't really want to do that on a bit of kit that costs this much, but what to do?

Thumb sticks feel delicate (this is of course subjective and my own projection). Don't like the button press action on them so may look for alternative button for each. Would have liked to be able to calibrate a dead zone for these too, but can't find option to do so - may have another look at this.

The kit looks really impressive. I feel pretty fantastic using it. I'll never get tired of the toggle switches, or the throttle. I also love the joystick little-finger clicker for flight assist off, REALLY handy. However the UI panel navigation is a bit of a pain to get used to.

Finally I retained the mouse for headlook. Working well and relieves one of the thumb sticks at least.

I'm just two days in so have no idea about quality concerns. I'm alarmed that I've been unable to identify the warranty period. Can't find it in the manual. Will get the box out and have a good look inside for any warranty card.

Give me a month and I'll post back with settled in view.

I didn't ever own any HOTAS before so can't really share a comparison.

I purchased an X55 to use for ED and flight sims and like many others, had to send it in for warranty repairs. This is back when it was Madcatz so I will only comment on the design of it vs. the quality.

For me the stick felt too large and I wear a large size glove, it was just too much of a reach for my thumb to use the top hat comfortably. I did like the twist feature for yaw and I also liked how the switches on the throttle were treated as buttons and not actual switches. It was light so I had to make sure it was secured to the desk when I used it. I did not care for their centering spring set-up but to be honest it didn't bother me so much until I tried a different design. Overall, it just felt light-weight and a little cheap for the $200 price tag.

After I sent it in for warranty replacement I tried a dual stick arrangement using a T16000m and a Saitek Evo. This felt the most natural to me for flying a space ship but while great for flight, it was lacking on buttons unless I wanted to take my hands off of the sticks and use the buttons on the base or a keyboard. So..... I decide to bite the bullet and get a warthog and a set of rudder pedals and this is what I currently use to fly ED.

The first thing I noticed about the warthog was the weight. It has a lot of metal, it is heavy. I don't feel like I am going to break it short of running it over with a truck. The second thing I noticed was how much better the stick fit my hand, my fingers just naturally rested over the switches and buttons without any awkward stretching. The third thing I noticed was it's overall size. This is a large set of controls and to just put it on my desk would have made the stick way too high to use comfortably. My solution was to build an extension arm that comes out from under my desk and attach the stick to it. This positions it much like it would in an actual cockpit, low and between my knees. As to the stiction issue, I did not find it to be really noticeable but I did go ahead and take it apart and clean up the extra grease and I find the stick movement to be smooth as silk.

If I had to do it all over again.

If ED was my only game, to me the ultimate set up would be a left and a right warthog stick with rudder pedals. The combination would give me all of the buttons I need and my hands would never leave the controls while also giving me the control that comes with two sticks. Since currently this is cost prohibitive (there is a third party working on a left hand warthog stick - you supply a right hand donor for internals) my second option would be dual T16000m with the new Thrustmaster rudder pedals and some script work in the TARGET software to allow the foot pedals to act as button modifiers. This should allow enough buttons to control everything without having to take your hands off of the sticks. However, since I also play a few flight sims and the throttle works well for those, I am quite happy with my current Warthog stick and throttle with MFG Crosswind rudder pedals. I am not a hotshot combat pilot so in all honesty I probably would not be that much better of a pilot with 2 sticks, but it just felt so natural to fly a spaceship that way.

If Logitech can remedy the quality control problems of the X56, I'm sure it will do the job just fine but after having the Warthog I can honestly say it is twice the stick the X55 was and then some (for twice the price). Another option is Thrustmaster's new HOTAS based on the T16000 but since I have not used, or even seen one I can't say how good it is (although my T16000m stick felt solid and was trouble free).

I am running the new T1600m FCS Hotas from Thrustmaster and I really like it. The stick is great, the best I've ever used and the throttle has enough buttons to keep me going on a very sensible layout.

Ermm.. what? :D

Just ask around here, X-56 is far from "good" what comes to quality. Just forget it and get Thrustmaster or something really durable, its my strong recommendation.

I have Logitech x56, arrived Tuesday.

Well, theres always people who ask for opinions and when they are told not to buy something, they still do... :D

I would strongly advise against the x56 I have had 4 of them... and 3 of them were broken out of the box, I linked a video in a separate thread in this forum. plus Logitech support regarding the x56 is horrible.. still awaiting a refund from them and it has been months not weeks.

CH hotas is lovely and what I use. People do get attached to their twist sticks though. Maybe the Thrustmaster T16000m FCS hotas would be more suitable for the OP?

I can't blame them, discovering how rubbish I am with the CH Products HOTAS and pedals. The brain needs to be able to wrap around using your feet for yaw before you can use anything that's not gimballed effectively. And I'm having a hard time tbh. :p

Still, coolness factor is there. The CH products HOTAS also feels insanely sturdy, especially compared the the X52 Pro I had before. But it's in a different price league from most other HOTAS, as you need additional pedals without Joystick twist.

The realization that with basically a single modifier, you can practically map everything to the stick and throttle, even the more obscure functions like weapon/drive color toggle is great though. ^^

...and I've been reading up on the new stick Saitek is working on for Star Citizen...

Is that even still a thing? o_O I thought the Star Citizen HOTAS comedy had disappeared after they tried to improve HOTAS, by turning them into mouses by means of trackballs.

Shame, but thanks. I'll stick with the X52 for now, possibly switch to the T16000.M FCS late next year.

As having some v. false statements....

The charmed baron vs corpsealot youtube reviews was an on going battle

- - - Updated - - -

and both were the old madcatz/seitek, not the new logitech, so for the most part should be a taken as an incorrect review for current stick....
Ill still wait for more reviews, but so far things seem to be improving on the x56

My quick, 6-months review of the Saitek Rhino X-56:

It still works. The two extra mini-sticks are very nice, mapped to thruster control. The originally stiff, gummy throttle action has loosened up nicely with use. Cons: A little big for my hands, but OK. Can't map the "slide" switch (wanted to map it to the cargo hatch) on the throttle. Limited documentation. Fit & Finish a little on the "meh" side but still OK for what it does. In general, I am happy with mine. Logitech just purchased Saitek so here's hoping things will improve even more over at Saitek.

Thrustmaster Warthog is working very well in ED and is build for eternity. Nothing else will ever be needed for any sort of flying simulation if you have this.
Some people cruiticize that it had no twist axis on stick - but I'm fine with thumb stick, it's very intuitive. I have also pedals but thumb stick is still better.

While we're doing the "push the HOTAS of your preference" discussion, I'd like to throw in a shoutout to the CH Products HOTAS:

ftrptpedkfrf1.png

On the Plus side:
  • HATS, HATS, HATS, HATS. Did I mention HATS?
  • Plastic, but feels sturdy as a brick. No rubberized surfaces that'll show wear quickly.
  • No useless gimmicks (think: useless buttons or displays on the throttle's base, aka X52(Pro)).
  • Stick and Throttle are sold separately and work as independent controller. You can mix & match either with other Joysticks (e.g. dual stick setup).
  • According to what other people who've been using them for years have said, very, very reliable (think 10 years).

On the Minus side:
  • Looks ugly as sin (In a glorious 90s way imo, but that depends on your personal preference).
  • No twist axis.
  • No useful gimmicks either.
  • Relatively expensive.

They lack all flashiness of the Thrustmaster Warthog or Saitek X56. But I started with a Saitek X52 (Pro), discovered that quiet a lot of its gimmicks were absolutely useless (mouse nub on throttle, switches on the stick's base? o_O) and moved on to the CH Products HOTAS and a fine set of pedals (MFG Crosswinds). I'm not going back. Unless it's for mouse & keyboard, which is also exceedingly well suited for Elite.
