Ships Tip for if you're struggling with the HUGE hardpoint Cannon (or plasma)

Maybe someone has already shared this? Not sure, but I figured this out myself last night, so for what it's worth...

When I first tried the FDL with huge Cannon I struggled - it's slower velocity means you have to lead the target so much you lose sight of it - usually miss.
I'd given up for a while, but last night I thought I'd try it one more time.

I had this eureka moment (well it's helped me - hopefully helps others)

When trying to lead the target and get a shot off my normal instinct is to pull back (positive G turn in an aircraft right?).
I experimented with rolling over so I can push into the turn instead (negative G's turn).

This not only keeps the target in your view so you can choose your moment, but the target is above your ship where your other weapons can gimbal and keep hitting it.
I'm still experimenting, feels unnatural, but I think it's helping.

Interested if this helps anyone, or if anyone else has any tips for being effective with the Huge Cannon?

p.s. this isn't a loadout debate, just Cannon please (or plasma, similar issue I think)

Great tip. Keeps your target in view, just make sure you don't nose over into an asteroid or anything as you can't see where you're going very well.

Would using the "lagging gun sight" option have the same effect?

maybe, but I don't think so because you still have to position the ship relative to the target to get a canon shot off.
The idea I'm suggesting (rolling the ship upsidedown to chase) is a bit like swapping your topside hardpoints with bottom side hardpoints. since cannons need quite a lead, but lasers don't, I think this helps and means both can hit the target, where otherwise only one or the other.

Just an idea anyway - not saying I'm any good at it, but I think it helps.

I use this fighting style with smaller cannons too, and it has always served me well; though as You say: It takes some getting used to. ;)

Cool. Yeah, I've been trying to get effective at it, but struggling to be honest - maybe I was just lucky the first time! Off topic, but my biggest difficulty with the Cannon is knowing whether it has even fired - launch sound is way too quiet. Over everything else I can't actually hear if I've got a shot off - unless it actually hits something.

Anyone else reckon it could be a bit louder? It's a "huge" cannon after all - wouldn't be out of place for a hefty firing sound.

I completely agree. Should make the ship vibrate :)

That and the faster projectile speed is the main reason i switched to plasma
