Newcomer / Intro Tip for new players that are afraid of open mode

If you are afraid of being taken out by experienced players, but still want to play with others... Try this

Go into the Dangerous Groups section and look at what is offered. Some groups are only PVE (player versus environment). The Commanders have agreed not to open fire on other Commanders. It may be an idea if you are looking to only fight NPC's. I am joining one - Mobius's group which is over 1400 strong!

This option will allow you to interact with real players, and NPC's. The Players will interact with you, but no fighting. When you hone your skills, you can go right back to open.

Though depending where you are, the odds are greatly against being interdicted by another player anyway. Have yet to have that happen at all in the last two weeks or so since the last actual wipe.

I've done this its a good group with some experienced helpful players. TeamSpeak as well!

Normally "open play" is not a problem of course in a system with lots of player around the chances are that you get interdicted/attacked by other player is there. But if you jump 3-5 star systems away the chances to see other players grows expotentialy less. I saw the last weeks no other player in my part of the galaxy :p

The habitated area is huge! (still less then 1 % of the available system)

How do you even know if you're seeing a player or NPC? There is no communications that i know of... and all ships look the same on the scanner so far as I can tell. I read something about PC ships being hollow and NPC ships being solid... but I got the impression that was from a previous beta version before I started. In the last few weeks that I've been playing I've never encountered another player that I'm aware of.

In four or so months of Open Play through Beta and Gamma, I have been interdicted by another player exactly once, and he didn't down me. I have been downed by another player exactly once - ran into him in a Resource Extraction Site IIRC. I have been attacked and interdicted by NPC bot pirates untold scores of times.

Open Play in my opinion simply does not add any further level of risk, and the potential for richer play by seeing and talking to other players is present, so why eliminate that out of misplaced fears?

Hollow vs solid marker in the radar (player vs NPC) - that is still absolutely valid. Also all players are labelled "CMDR" as a prefix to their name when selected.

Communications are available via text chat and voice when a ship is targetted. Used to be the "2" key but for all I know that default has changed (I still use "2"). Check your keymapping under Options | Controls to find the keybinding for "Comms".

One evil nasty word - Eve...

I started Eve on Day one, I had alot of fun, it didn't take long for people to figure out how to Pirate even in Low Sec space.
I haven't bought Elite as of yet, I want to, I have had it in Check out at least 10 times the past 3 days...

Everytime I tried to go back to Eve it was worse - I just wanted to mine, be left to my own devices and explore an Immense Universe - I am not interested in Fighting other players, I will fight NPC's I do enjoy that.
I want the benefits of an MMO Marketplace with a Solo Play experience, I don't want to be killed while out mining by some 16 year old with reflexes to match his age. I have 4 grand children my Dog fighting days are behind me.
I want to explore a complex and immense Universe, I want to invite my friends to join me in exploring new systems and fighting NPC's without being concerned about being by kids that can spend 20 hours a day on Combat skills and gearing up so I have no chance to win.

Or to summarize

I want a Casual Gaming experience with MMO capabilities.

Your not the only ol' timer....play solo or in a private PvE group...the one I'm in is in my sig...

I always thought I would play in a private group, but have been in Open from the start of Beta 1, I havent been griefed (well only by NPC's), I like seeing real players now, as half the time exploring I dont see anyone, so its kind of consoling to see a few odd Commandrs when you come back into popular space.

@Rhok - I do see your point, and I'm an old-timer, too. So far, though, Open Play and Solo play just look a lot alike to me. I've seen tons more cranky bots than players, and they're still there in Solo. Perhaps when I get ganked by some 16yo kid I'll feel differently - but even if so, there's a lot of galaxy out there for me to avoid those guys and lose myself in.

Thats the reason why i propose an Open PvE Mode being added in this thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=69757

Limiting the gaming experience for players to groups or solo play is inacceptable.
