Newcomer / Intro Tip: Galaxy Route Plotting

For those new to the game:

There may be times that you need to go to a system that's far beyond the reach of your FSD for example - say, 20 LY and your drive max is 9LY. So you decide to use the Plotting Tool in the map, and it tells you it can't find a route. So you're thinking "I can't GET there, there's no waypoint system to travel through". This happened as I was trying to complete a mission. Two things:

1. Rotate and move the view of the galaxy around, and click on nearby stars your CAN reach that are in the general direction. Get as close as you can to your destination (and remember, it's 3D space) and jump. On arrival, repeat. It's sort of like hopping blindly in the general direction. The closer you get, you may see a NEW system (that wasn't there before) that you can reach. This basically applies to areas you've never been before. When most of your target systems indicate "no system data available", this is a clue that there might be other stars around there not even on your map yet.

2. Once you've done this, and reached your ultimate destination - now the fun starts. Because you've actually toured around the galaxy neighborhood, your mapping computer will now be able to plot a course with more system options.

I don't consider this a bug whatsoever. It's more how real life exploration works - until you've started going somewhere, the fastest route to repeat that journey (or continue) may not be known. So - fire up the FSD and explore some hyperspace. You might find some new trade options in those "unreachable" systems. And always purchase the fuel scoop for this sort of thing, as there's not always a gas station along the way. :)

+1 have some rep.

To add a bit to point 1. To work your way to the same vertical plane as your destination it can help to select the destination, then scroll back to your start point and through zooming in or out determine vertically how far off you are. It's not a big deal on short trips but can be a bummer on a long trip to think your getting close, only to realize your off 100 ly's vertically.
