Horizons Tip-Off Mission Mistake May Have Been Made...

Got my first Tip-Off Mission while doing some Sothis - Ceos runs last night so i bookmarked the System/Plane in question and decided i'd check it out when i completed my trading run.

BTW just a quick declaration.... I hate the slow laborious task of manually finding lat/lon landmarks.... very slow and very tedious. Please ED let us use the surface map to set a target/beacon/marker of some sort so it can appear on the HUD when entering orbital flight....

Anyway, after about a solid 30min slowly slowly edging my way to the supplied co-ordinates i landed, jumped into my SRV and off i went. Now the mission read something like you'll find some wreckage at the following coordinates, scan the blah blah blah ... I've supplied your ship with the appropriate encryption key ..... Also i thing at clearly said i'd need to land on the planet and use the SRV.

So i've just realised that the 'Wreckage' that i actually found and scanned wasn't really a ship wreckage but one of the POI downed satellites that are a dime s dozen.

I now fear that i should have been looking for an actual ship wreckage, possibly not unlike the wrecked Anaconda in theMerope/mia system (can't remember which).

Can anyone confirm that i screwed that one up, or provide an account of a successful Tip-Off Mission so i can determine if i screwed up or not.

Many thanks CMDR's.

Yep you did. It will be a very distinct ship wreck, probably something like this:

Cheers artigan99, I had feeling that was the case. Any idea if that 'Tip-Off Mission' would still be active given that i've trashed the initial mission message?

I look forward to the next one. I like the variety things like this bring, something different to shift focus from the grind it can sometimes become.

;)

Maybe you went to the wrong place? If it's a moon, the letters are not capitalized (as in Maiki 3 A being spelled "Maiki 3 a") so they can easily be over-read and you end up in the wrong place. I once over-read a minus too, I'll admit.

Navigating to the right coordinates feels more tricky than it is - of course, it slightly depends on your luck where you enter OC and get your current position displayed - a map selector would help; I considered that too on my first Tip Off trip - but it would take away the gameplay of actually finding the wreck and hence feel less rewarding.

If you're roughly in the right place, you should be able to see the wreck even while still in your ship and kilometers above surface.

I just completed this tip-off mission - it was a real pain lining up with the co-ordinates and took a lot of flying. The problem is, once you enter supercruise to get there faster, you lose the heading indicator, so have to use the stars as a rough guide (perhaps that's the idea), then the last part of flying low in 'normal' flight can take a lonnnng time if (as I was) you are over a big planet.

But there is a sense of achievement when you hit the target co-ordinates and get out in your SRV and do the final search for the crash site. I can't say I could see the crash from the air, though, because it was pretty well hidden. Even from the SRV it resembled a rocky outcrop in sand until I got close to it.

Once I had scanned the data it triggered a second mission, implying a pilot could be rescued nearby, but I never got to find him with a cursory search in the SRV nearby. Maybe I should have used the ship and hunted a nearby POI, but I decided to go for the money and head home !

The cash reward from these is good ! I received something like a quarter of a million credits and it helps to make up for the immense difficulty and time spent reaching the co-ordinates. Perhaps practice makes doing these easier, but it is a huge amount of effort finding the co-ordinates planet-side. Anything to make this aspect a little easier would be welcome and perfectly in line with what we would expect a modern spaceship to be equipped with in the era we are flying.

Edit - it was more like three quarters of a million reward ... pretty good !

I made a quicky vid about how to do these, maybe it will be helpful.

Also this thread, about the ghost ship. I posted some pics and a vid there too.

+1 [up] Good video, thanks. I guess I approached too high to spot the crash site visually: it was pretty clear from your position. Next time .....

Did you not find the crashed pilot? - I didn't achieve that part. We need footprints to help find him :D
