tip off?

I had a really disappointing adventure just now, followed this tip off I got after completing some mission that told me to go to a location and retrieve some data.

It specifically tells me that there is data to collect and that I need to do it in the next few days or else it'll be gone. So I went there a few hours later and find a major crash site!

3x type 9's and 2x Anaconda's laying near each other half embedded in the floor. I thought WOW this looks cool there must be something worth getting here!

After taking out 5 skimmers I land and venture around in my buggy but that's basically were the excitement ended. I scouted all the ships around and even on top the wrecks and found no data.
In total I picked up 2 containers of narcotics and discarded 7 containers of coffee, beer, grain and algae. It was a bit of a fiddle trying to find this spot and locate the crash site but felt it was totally not worth it! :S

Did I miss something here? Because for me it feels like the whole thing was a massive wasted opportunity to make something interesting happen and instead the whole thing was over before it even started. Was this connected to some story? It completely passed me. [where is it]

"There's some wrecked ships, 5 massive vessels were taken down on this location"
"Ok, Ill go check it out!"

"I found the ships! A ton of beer and 2 tonnes of narcotics. Ok. No life signs. Nothing else to do here. Guess I'll go back to what I was doing then. Why did I come here again? Probably won't bother with this tip off crap in future." [blah]

When ever I get one of these it always gives up an intel package. Usually you have to basically target the cockpit of the downed craft to initiate the scan.

Beer & narcotics & 5 crashed starships?

Sounds like you missed a hell of a party.

This was exactly my first though as I started to pick up the containers! I was like Geez you guys need to lay off the sauce.

Yeah, that's what I imagined would be there. I checked each ship though and there was nothing to target nor select in contacts page.

It was just (another) one of those moments that really should have been interesting, memorable game play and turned out to be completely meaningless. What more can I say [zZzZz]

They're usually on the most right side up Anaconda's bridge. Hard to reach sometimes.

Though you don't need to actually climb the ship, just get close to whatever anaconda has the data and then use the turret to look up at the bridge.

Also, who goes on a 5+ day expedition with multiple crew members in an EAGLE.

The intel package from the ship (usually anaconda) is worth 500k+, sometimes 1mill + and can be redeemed at any contacts tab (I think) while docked.

Ill give it another look tonight then, I have to take more screenshots anyway as I was in VR the whole time I was there. Fortunately I was still there when I logged off as finding these places is pretty awkward.

Makes a good screenshot for the bank though.

Maybe that's why they crashed? :p
Actually thinking about it, what do those people who go out into deep space explorations eat? Everyone just strips down their ship until it's a big empty container with a fuel scoop in front and a jump drive in the back. Granted, 3 tons of food for an Eagle crew is a bit much an Anaconda should have pretty big (invisible to the player) crew requirements. Also I wonder if ships like the sidewinder, viper and eagle have toilets.

I was there last night and found a data core on one of the Anaconda which gave me a 600k intel package. Another CMDR also turned up as I was leaving with the same tip off, we had a brief chat but I didn't hang around to see if he could also download the data packet. I'm guessing he would have had to have left the instance back to supercruise and return.
