Tipping The Witches Hat

A while ago now I went on my first little exploration adventure: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/233685-A-strange-new-world

The time has come for me to head out again and spread my admittedly small explorer wings..

Firstly, my ship. For this trip I shall be taking Euryale, a Cobra MKIII.

This is the basic load out, https://coriolis.io/outfit/cobra_mk...2iv6.Iw1-kA==.EwBgjCqgLAzNcR1iJQ==?bn=Euryale, although a few items have been altered by a friendly Engineer.

This gives me the following stats:

For those with the frame of mind to care this is level one boosted powerplant, level one clean drive, and a level three FSD. Also has a minor level one modification to the shield booster.

Onto my challenge, and the real point of this log:

Tipping The Witches Hat.

I had a plan. I wanted to go see the Witch Head Nebula. What I wanted was a why. I then found the Witchhaul system and an idea formulated.

I would do the witch haul....

So. Get an item in Witchhaul. And take it to the Witch Head Nebula. And discard it.

Tipping the Witches hat.... I don't know where I heard this phrase, but it is the one that came to my mind and spawned the idea.

So it is all a bit of a play on words adventure. Seems like a good excuse for a run out.

So here we go. I went to witchhaul and as luck would have it I found a really appropriate item to tip:

I then plot a route which gives me some expected mileage. It turns out it is short enough for the computer to handle straight out:

41 jumps total. That is not to bad a run. I plan on doing a fair bit of scanning as I go, and hope to build towards the next level of explorer. There is no fixed agenda though, so fun is the name of this trip.

I left tonight, and after eleven jumps with a good section of scanning time, about 8 of the systems fully scanned, have just left the bubble:

I shall continue on tomorrow.

John.

Perhaps you could end your trip by returning to the suitably witch-y Hecate system - by selling your data there to the right people you could get the Terra Mater permit as a bonus.

Yep, that's the place.

I'm sure I've seen some other witch-related systems aside from Hecate, but don't remember the names offhand. Hecate gets a bad rap, though I'm not so sure about the dogs...

(I once saw witches* collecting money for a dogs charity* in the name of Hecate. Which is cool, after all, Hecate has a thing for dogs... 'cept historical people would, like, sacrifice dogs to her. Times change.) :)

*yes, really.

I finally got to climb into my ship again today, a week since the last time.

I managed to jump and scan my way through five or six more systems, when my internet connection decided to glitch out for a short time. No real things of interest to note, and no pictures of coolness. I found a lot of metallic worlds on the way.

Euryale is running well, and the minor FSD upgrade is proving just enough of a boost to make it a very pleasant ship for this trip.

An interesting idea for the exploration data too Jackie Silver, thank you for the suggestion.

Ok a few more legs on the trip were completed and a short break will now ensue. I was starting to get a little fed up of just flying around scanning things and running to the next system, so finding some atmospheric picture opportunities became the name of the game.

I am now about 15 jumps away from the Witch Head Nebula. It is certainly filling the screen as I head that way.

A wistful glance at what I would call home. It seems so far away:

Home may seem far away, but the objective is certainly getting closer:

About to get underway, this shows the jump just about to happen:

Messing about in a sea of rocks, an atmospheric picture that I just like:

.

Good luck.

But this is a witch's hat. ;)

:p

Very late coming, but today I made it to my objective. Work and other commitments made this a long trip. But here is the "proof" of the pudding in picture form, and the witches hat was tipped.

I ended up 900ly from Sol, so not a massive trip by any means. I can say though it has sated my exploration bug for a while.

The ship has performed great, and for some very minor modifications has become a very nice one to fly.

Wee warning over witch head...I was there yesterday and started bumping into an awful lotta closed systems..."unknown permit required".

Got through witch head ok but after one more jump in barnards direction, its like a solid wall of unknown permits required. Went about 500ly to the right and still can't get through so either I go back the way I came, or keep pushing further up near california nebula.

Good luck cmdr ^^

How was Rigel? I wanted to make that system.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Honestly no idea m8, sorry...right now I'm just trying to cross over to the outer arm, before working my way up the scenic route to jacques. Witch head was the first nebula on my outward bound cos I've never actually seen it up close before and was on way to barnards loop but can't even get close to it. It's a shame cos witch head is very striking against the loop in the background...but...moving on...ye know how it is, lot's to see and lot's of distance to cover.

Thanks for the intel anyways. I was thinking of doing some short nebula expeditions that I could accomplish over a weekend in closer nebulae and Witch Head was going to be the first one on my list.

I'll check it right out and report back to you when I get out there.

I'm just 2 days into what is planned as my longest trip yet...possibly the last, but I am planning on still being out after xmas whatever the case. I've done shorter trips but never any longer than 3 weeks, and 3 weeks just ain't enough. I read about guys who been out in the black fer over a year and I'm like yeah...I got some catching up to do and there's a lotta things I've never seen yet ^^

My last expedition was 14,000LY's around. Thanks to Real LifeTM I can't plan to sit on the bridge doing 350LY stints for weeks on end at the moment. I'm planning to hit nebulae within a 1000LY range of The Bubble that I can attain in one sitting and do over weekends.... at least for the next couple of months and then it's out into the deep black again next year.

For a few weeks I'm just going to do Bubble missions and amp up my credits with a view to buying (yet another) ship.

So yeah; I might do the Witch Head nebula next weekend....I'll let you know.

Good luck with your trip, Commander. I took what, to me, was a fairly lengthy one over the weekend. Not much to some but it took me hours and I felt a real sense of achievement on my return.

I call mine the dad pad

My daughters just assume that if I'm not playing with them then I'm probably flying my spaceship. The scary thing is that since my youngest wasn't quite two and a half at the start of Gamma she probably doesn't remember that I ever did anything else with my free time...
