Tips and questions for Quest 2

Haven't played in a few years and didn't have VR back then. Have had a quest 2 for awhile now and was thinking of trying ED again see how it is with VR. As title say I have a quest2.

I am a backer so don't have the steam version of the game so will be using the frontier stand alone launcher and I am in windows 10.

My PC:
cpu 5800x
ram 32gb 3600mhz
gpu 1080ti
drive nvme sn850x
HMD Quest 2 with bobovr M2 Pro headstrap and battery

I don't have a cable to link to my PC so I use the air link and so far has worked fine for the game I have played in PCVR like beat saber, Alyx etc. The link cable is kind of expensive here in Canada so I haven't bothered to buy one as reviews on almost all of them say they are junk and wont last.

Any tips on what setting I should use keeping in mind quest 2 and my specs, what do I need to make this work good?

Also what is this about legacy and live? I am assuming playing in VR on live is not recommended cause it has issues so will avoid live but what the difference between horizons live and legacy exactly?

You don’t need the expensive official Link cable - I’ve been using this cheap USB-C one since 2019 without any problems with my Quest 1, 2 & 3.

I also have the stand-alone launcher version of ED and getting the game running in VR is straightforward. If you’ve enabled external sources in the Oculus desktop software then Elite should detect your headset and you can select “HMD Headphones” in the game settings to enable VR.

I’d stick to Legacy as the Live game demands high PC requirements and unfortunately still has a number of graphical issues 👍

Thanks, I got the game running right now...gonna have to remember how to fly first though lol and set up my t16000m stick. I used to play with one stick and keyboard mouse when needed but I really need a better set up from my couch or maybe just get a proper chair and can set up as a movable flight chair so to speak.

Its look good right now with airlink, I got the bitrate for that set to 150 but havent really touched anything else in game settings as I dunno what I am doing there for VR tbh.

I made brackets for my t16000M HOTAS so they slide onto my couch seat cushions and are braced against the frame so I can quickly set them up (my rudder pedals are stored to the side) and still enjoy a comfortable derrière 😁

Look at HMD Quality for increasing game sharpness (I have SuperSampling at 1.0 and HMDQ at 1.25) but the rest of the settings will have to be tuned to your liking - I prefer all settings as high as can be but take the hit on clarity, while others prefer as high a resolution as possible and turn down settings to compensate. Using the Oculus Debug Tool to have in-headset performance graphs can be really useful when adjusting settings - I tend to park up near a station docking slot and start tuning there 👍

I went in game and was parked in a station and set up some settings following this graphic quality settings here but dunno how good it is by swingfish:

Also found this which seems interesting but havent touched anything there yet:

bedtime for now though since its 3am lol

Cable wise I use the

Kuject Design 16FT Link Cable for Oculus Quest 2

It alows me to charge and play at the same time so I can play for unlimited time periods and not worry about running out of charge.
It doesnt need to be linked to a PC to work but does work when linked to a PC.

You really need a wired connection for a decent image. You are leaving a lot of eye candy on the table if using air link

Ditto, best thing I've bought for my Quest 2.

Haven't messed around today as I just didn't have time but the game looked really nice using airlink. Dunno but are you peeps using airlink correctly?

Haven't really had issues with airlink with say alyx or asgard wrath, beat saber etc etc and I play all those games in PCVR. I have looked at the Kuject wire and it has some pretty bad reviews all in all on amazon.ca. It's like at 16% 1 stars and the reviews mostly all complain about the same couple things about it.

Not saying wired isn't better but for my needs for now at least airlink looks nice and I dont have any issues with it.

Tentatively for now I got these settings:

  • Model Draw: 45% (this is a performance heavy, so you can just play with it to fit your need)
  • Texture Quality: Medium (this can be high, but there is little difference in VR)
  • Shadow Quality: High

  • Bloom: OFF (Seriously, unless you want to go blind when looking at a star) :)
  • Blurr: off
  • Anti Aliasing: FXAA
  • Supersampling: 1.25 (if you use VR Toolkit you can go as high as 1.75 which will SIGNIFICANTLY change the quality, but you need some serious horsepower and the VR Toolkit, which is free)

  • Ambients: Medium
  • Envioment: High (ultra will kill the rendering when you aproach a complex station)
  • FX Quality: OFF

  • Depth of Field: OFF
  • Material Quality: Medium (high is better but the tradeoff is at least another 5% performance, not worth it)
  • Galaxy Map: high
  • Terrain: Medium
  • Terrain Blending: High (this is important otherwise it will feel like you going from 3d to a comic book when the terrain rendering shifts
  • Terrain Sampler: Ultra
  • Jet Cones: high (can be High or ultra, depending on how you like it, collector limpets do look EPIC with this setting being on ultra)
  • Volumetric: High
  • Field of view: 0

I don’t have any issues with AirLink - I’m in the same room as my router and have it set at 200mbs and think the visuals look great. I tend to use the cable for seated games like Elite so the battery doesn’t discharge as fast.

Looks like a good set of options, very similar to what I was using with my Rift S / 1080 set up 👍 I tended to knock Ambient Occlusion to Off as it’s a big frame hitter and I didn’t mind the visual downgrade.

Nothing wrong with Airlink, or Virtual Desktop, especially in the majority of games, but ED is pretty text heavy. It may be that a "better" headset would help but for me personally, the text definition on my Quest 2 is much lower/softer via airlink/VD compared to cable. The upside to that is that the appalling anti-aliasing is softened but the text, while perfectly readable is noticeably less detailed, and once I notice that, I notice the details on everything else too.

I've messed with all the settings in Airlink and VD; I just (personally) find the cable connection to provide a much sharper and detailed image. As for the Kuject cable, I've not read the reviews, but I'd bet that many say the same things; it doesn't keep my headset charged blah blah blah. I'd also bet that most of them did NOT follow the connection order correctly. The cable has to be connected to the power first, then the headset, then the PC. If it's not done in that order, the cable acts like a normal cable and takes power from the USB plug on the PC. I could be wrong, but I've 2 Kuject cables in my house, both to Quest 2's, and both have worked without issues for well over a year.
