Hello,
Firstly, this is for the new commanders just starting out. Most of the seasoned Commanders know this stuff already. I do not proclaiming these are the best ways, but the ways I have found work best for me. I have made my way up to a Type 9 Heavy and then had a mishap, and now have made my way back up to a Type 9 Heavy but in a quicker time. I will not be offering any trading tips here, as again, everyone has different opinions on that subject. If other Commands have more tips they would like to share, I welcome you to add them.
Here are some of the tips I use in ED
Navigation
-------------
Before launching from any space port, it's always better to have set your navigation computer to the star system you want to hyperspace to. This saves time when you are out of the star port. Essentially, you can launch, and jump in a short period of time.
Docking:
----------
Always put your shields up to full (4 notches) when approaching or leaving any star port. This will save you when hitting the side of the entrance due to mis-alignment, and also will save you when other pilots hit you due to not seeing you in time, or just being reckless and pushing their way in. To make it easier going though the entrance, do not lower your landing gear outside the station, as this gives you more chance to catch on something as you pass though the entrance (your ship is effectively taller. It's better I find, to get to your landing pad, hover above it, and then lower your landing gear, then descend onto the pad. When leaving, again ascend a small way above your pad (taking care to always look around you to see what other commanders are doing in the docking area), raise your landing gear, and then maneuver your way out of the space port.
Hyperspace Jumps
-----------------------
When leaving a space port, I find that once you are though the exit and into space, diverting all power to the engines (4 notches into Engine) and then after burning once, will get you to the save distance to hyperspace in a relatively fast time. As soon as you enter hyperspace and the stars are shooting past your window, you can throw your thrust vector into reverse. This will have no bearing during hyperspace, but as soon as you come out and are facing the star/sun of the system, you ship will start to brake.
Frame Shift Travel
----------------------
Once you have set your nav computer to target the starport you are wishing to goto, and you have aimed your ship in the direction of that destination, increase your engine thrust until the light on the engine thrust slider turns blue. This puts the ship into auto control of the engines. Your engine speed may increase and decrease on its own while in this mode, but you will arrive at your target at a speed that will allow you to disengage the drive without flying past it. WARNING - When in this mode it is only the engines that are auto controlled. You still need to steer your ship.
Coming Out Of Frame Shift Drive At Destination
-----------------------------------------------------------
When coming out of frame shift and you see the station ahead of you, a little tip so that you always aim to the correct side of the station. Saving you time. if the station is turning anti clockwise, then you should be facing the entrance point. If the station is tumbling towards you, the entrance is on the right side, if the station is tumbling away from you the entrance is on the left side. If the station is turning clockwise then the entrance is on the reverse side.
