Tips on getting the "Naval Progession Mission" you want...

So, I'm busy ranking up my second account to buy a Cutter.

The mission boards are now supposed to be immune to board swapping (and it appears they are - mostly). However, I did notice some "interesting" behavior specific to the "Naval Progression Missions"...

I'm grinding for rank in a Courier I purchased just for this purpose (cause its fast and fun to fly!). So no cargo or combat capacity to speak of. Just running Data Delivery missions. Getting a "Combat" or "Sourcing" or even a "Cargo" rank progression mission is pretty pointless for my Courier. I'ld just wait until a Data Delivery progression mission would pop up while the ranking system banked my overage points.

Anyway... I did notice, after ignoring some non-playable (for me) Cargo/Combat/Sourcing Progression Mission, that the mission was re-offered AFTER I closed the mission board and immediately re-opened it. (I may have left the mission boards to read a "Mission Critical Message" or something...) ...and it was re-offered as a completely different mission! Immediately!

So, no more flying around until a "workable" progression mission finally pops up. Just close completely out of the station menu's and re-open them. (look for the rotating hexagon progress meter) I've now done this on several occasions and it appears that the Naval Progression missions are instance specific and immediately generated (and re-generated) when the station board is opened. They are NOT persistent like the rest of the missions the board offers. If you don't like the one being offered, just close and reopen the station menus until you get the type you want. Its working for me!

...and I also think its accurate (and fairly common knowledge) that Naval Progression missions are ONLY offered at Outposts. You won't find them at larger stations or orbitals (at least I never have...)

I got several naval progression missions offered to me today from jameson memorial and later while traveling at another large station so they do spawn there a least

This is what the behaviour always used to be so it makes sense. They weren't generated with other missions, they would generate & you'd be able to open/close mission board to change the mission each time until one you were happy with came up. I guess if they weren't part of the mission generating system before then it is possible they behave like they always did.

All the advice I ever saw was just fly around till your mission pops up. If it didn't suit you just keep going till you get one you like. The consolation was that your ranking points kept accumulating anyway.

Never heard anyone document this behavior so it was a surprise to me!

When i did my fed grind at sothis/ceos running data i remember it could take ages for a progression mission to spawn, maybe that's why you've never seen one at a large station
I have a feeling they will spawn at any place wit a fed/imp controlling faction.. Eventually

Is this actually a thing?

I got my rank up missions very easy. Just go to any station with 4+ factions of the chosen power and click on each of the mission tabs. If a rank up mission is not found on the first time, board flip and there is one in 9 times out of 10.

All the required info about factions can be found in the galaxy map and on the mission board (logos under the X/Y missions number). At the time of writing this I'm at a station with 5 federal factions, board flip once and I'd have 10 different chances to get a mission to level up and usually that was enough. All that it takes after that is to have a ship that can handle multiple types of missions including medium bases and everyone knows that the ship is Python. Boom, 5 ranks in an hour guaranteed.

I've personally never seen a progression mission spawn at a large station, but every single time one was due, it shows up at right on schedule at an Outpost. I've never had it take any "time" as long as my NEXT hop was an Outpost that was part of my "grind".

It doesn't show up reliably at the same station you meet your current rank cap, but it will at the very next "ranking" outpost you visit. IOW you have to leave the station where you met your quota and then visit the next one in your "loop".

Also, It won't appear by board flipping at the station where you met your current quota. You have to visit the "next" one and you can board flip there to change the progression mission "type".

At least these are my current observations as I'm currently ranking up my second account... I've been trying to pay pretty close attention and taking some time to test my observations/theories...

I got my rep from hauling a zillion refugees and did the ranking at Jameson Memorial. I don't know if that counts as a big station but it took 5 hours in total to get Corvette (rep and 5+ ranks).
