Tips on progression with Felicity Farseer

This weekend I managed to get a few hours playtime in 2.1 and spent the time on local exploration and "Puddle Hopping" to find engineers material for Felicity Farseer. I found some interesting information that I thought I would pass on. I cover...

- How to find the unlock commodity (not to much detail :p)
- How to quickly progress through reputation using exploration data
- How I found more 'elaborate' wake data (needs more data to confirm)
- Which USS's seemed to offer best results for materials (needs more data to confirm)
- Where I was able to quickly find prospecting materials (not to much detail :p)
- A neat trick for breaking interdiction (needs more data to confirm)

Before you start!
If you want to do the material and commodity hunting in a ship other than your target ship, I used my cobra which was more combat oriented. Make sure your target ship has cargo space for any commodity requirements for the upgrade! I didn't check this before I started but luckily I had racks in my Asp for the Modular Terminals I needed when I swapped.

If you would rather find this out yourself do not read on.

- You need to buy your Meta-Alloys currently from a base in a fairly close nebula, took me ages in Galnet to find details of possible location.
- Use a D-Scanner on your way to get your meta-alloys and try to vary the route there and back, I was able to progress to grade 3 with Felicity using just the exploration data from that trip (~400-500kcr of scans). You can only use this by unlocking Felicity using meta-alloys then logging out and back in to show cartographics at Farseer Inc.
- I found greater success in specific USS's. The encoded emissions USS's gave me Chemical Processors, Chemical Manipulators & Chemical Distilleries
- I was given Modular Terminals as a reward from a simple courier mission from Matteucci Dock in DECIAT
- I was able to find Selenium & Yttrium close to a crater on an icy moon in DECIAT really quickly (~30mins prospecting)
- When high wake scanning I found Atypical Disrupted Wake Echoes, Anomalous FSD Telemetry & Strange Wake Solutions from hi-wakes that were <10km from the station stations. For some scans I was boosting out to 19km so maybe distance from the station has an effect? (more data required)
- Finally, with the improved AI I found interdictions were way more common, so I had way more practice trying to avoid them. In doing so I noticed there seems to be an opportunity to break interdiction by throttling down, waiting for the "Submitting to interdiction" message and then throttling up. I certainly broke interdiction attempts on a number of occasions using this method. It resulted in the interdictee(?) falling out of super cruise while leaving me to carry on my way. This definitely needs more experimentation to see if there is a window of escape that can be derived as a fool(ish) proof tactic.

As to how my upgrade went on the first attempt? In total I unlocked and upgraded FDS range within 3-4 hours of interrupted play. I got a 21% improvement in optimal mass, +~1250 tonnes from memory. But it cost an increase of +4% mass to the drive (+~4 tonnes). Net benefit, I think the upgrade has added ~6ly to my max jump range based on my Iron Asp Explorer build:
http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/15A5A...2v62i2f.Iw18WQ==.Aw18WQ==?bn=Stella Retriever

I now have a jump range of ~32ly on the same build.

Hope this helps

Thanks for sharing Cmdr... It will be a long while before I'm back in the bubble but a trip to Felicity will be on the cards...

Further thoughts on engineers game mechanics

After reading the thread here:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/263168-FDev-just-watch-this-video

I think its a pretty negative critique of the engineers update. I would say I really enjoyed the challenge of getting my first mod.

I had a particular target (improve FSD range) and a limited amount of knowledge (knew I could use exploration data, knew which system bodies to prospect) but had to work a number of new mechanics out my self (use discovery scanner on nav beacon to find black box retrieval mission spawn location, use galnet to find Meta-alloy system location, use material hint text to find new materials) . For the first time since launch this information was largely available to find in game. --The notable exception is the surface prospecting...

But i think this comment has hit the nail on the head on how this might be addressed:

*UPDATE: The ability to see materials has been added to the planetry body information using detailed surface scanner.*

If FD could include a live tutorial system/captains log similar to the one seen in Satellite Reign where, as you unlock new data and learn new systems in the game, it is recorded to your profile. For example...

- When you find selenium on a number of Icy planets/moons but find none on High Metal Content bodies have the game record that observation for you to a prospecting log book in the game
- When you discover the nav beacon dishes out mission target updates when you scan it, have it recorded in your mission debriefing note book.
- When you find Meta-Alloys at a specific location have the game log it as a book mark automatically
- If the USS types I scan and enter do indeed affect the probability of certain materials being found, have the game record that information in my scavengers observations log.
- If certain surface features do affect where I might find specific materials, as I explore and build an understanding of these rules, have the game record those findings at a reasonable point... Day 412 - After landing close to a crater on a High Metal Content World and exploring the surface I can confirm Metalic Meteorites are more likley to contain Arsenic in this type of environment than similar locations on Rocky Planets.
- Once its clear a player has realised certain scanner/game sounds identify specific surface resource locations or exploration bodies, recod the observation to an exploration log... After scanning 5 Earth Like Worlds during deep space journeys I can confirm they emit a unique audio signal from the system mapping and taargeting systems <-play sound-> or After extensive searches of surface resources it seems Meteorites can be identified by the following wave form and audio signal from the SRV wave scanner <-play sound -> <-view wave scanner signal -> These features tend to provide the following raw materials Icy Bodies - Selenium, Iron Other?? High Metal Content Bodies - Inconclusive Data

I can continue to make all these notes manually, and i probably would. However if the game also did this it would confirm my hypotheses and provide a positive feedback loop then I can continue experimenting in other areas with the confidence that i will be rewarded if i make a reasonable discovery.

Currently those discoveries have no history, no cause and effect. As an individual if the game recorded and logged the results of my experiments, prospecting and exploring in a similar way to the monster prospecting google doc initiative and kept it all in the game context that would be *awesome*.

Awesome, thanks :) thats great a decent portion of Mats can be found in Decait itself- the modular terminals no less as I know from A fellow group Cmdr that even they (for grade 3) can be a pain - I shall camp @ Matteucci as they're all I need for grd3. Tuning up the T-6 hopefully Felicity can get me a nice adv on the current 24Ly unladen range- though I'm proud she's got that as Its a lot of kit (armed, shielded, cargo +32, extra fuel+32, SRV, both exploring scanners + scoop) I think that's doable for most adventures, salvage explorer outfit with comfortable concessions (DBX felt far too bare for the DEEP surveys, but 33+Ly range- half again of this good ol tiddy oggy!) but could've had 28+Ly- taking big hit on range I know but feeling much more confident better kitted now though. Getting Asp when I'm next back, but would love to get this T-6 playing in the 30Ly club and without compromising chosen internal until I feel veteran enough run leaner?
Anyhow,
Excellent Engineer advice& assistance here Cmdr, Respect + Regards Sir!
Godspeed Cmdrs 7o

Another useful thing to remember (which is obvious but easy to forget about when actually there): if what you're after is grade 5 access for a Grade 5 Increased Range FSD, you can obtain that by building things other than Increased Range FSDs.

Increased Range FSD 3 requires Modular Terminals, which are hard to obtain (and better given to Marco Qwent if you haven't unlocked him yet). On the other hand, Fast Boot FSD 3 requires Hardware Diagnostic Sensor, which can be bought. Sure, Fast Boot FSD 3 is utterly useless, but you get the rep from building it, not from installing it, so just build three, throw them away, and now you're rank 4 and Increased FSD Range 4 requires a purchasable commodity.

With Farseer you could also go for Drive Strengthening 3 (CMM Composite which is found all over the galaxy); for Martuuk Reinforced Shields 3 and Enhanced Low Power Shields 3 both use purchasable commodities.

Did I misunderstand this, as a detailed surface scan does reveal the available materials and the percentage of each on the planet once you've scanned it

I dont think you mis-understood, its possible the available materials came in an update after my post, Or maybe I was so used to them not being there, I didnt notice the addition when I was looking for them.

I know there was an update that balanced the materials and made them easier to find shortly after the initial engeneers drop.

Thinking about it it also seems the addition of the commander logs might indicate the first steps to adding a learning system like I discuss which is a great sign. I might look closer at the API to see if that could be a 3rd party tool...

I've got a video series aimed at newer players, and in Part 7 and 8 I do everything needed to unlock Felicity Farseer, rank her up to Grade 5, and get all the mats for a Grade 5 FSD Range upgrade, and some other smaller upgrades for thrusters and powerplant, etc.

If anyone is interested, everything you need to know for doing an FSD Range upgrade is in there.
