Tips & tricks for using the galaxy and system map with VR & HOTAS?

I use a HOTAS for all gameplay, and a mouse and keyboard for the galaxy and system maps. I’ve always found the using a HOTAS with the maps to be sloooow, clunky and awkward. I tried using a keyboard+mouse with the headset on, and the mouse cursor is all wonky. And with VR, I have to take off the headset to find the keyboard home keys, to type in specific star systems (which is sort of immersion breaking).

I spend a lot of time plotting routes, hopscotching around star systems, checking out the sights, running missions and outfitting ships. What do you do to quickly get around the maps, and search for star systems?

Which HOTAS are you using - like many others here my X52 Pro configuration includes navigation (I have the same for HOTAS X also) and I'd happily upload either and put a link for you to download to your system.

I don't think there is any method that is a quick as a mouse in pancake, but some configs are 'easier' than others :)

I have a Logitech X56. Identical layout to the Saitek X56. An analog thumb-stick on the throttle moves forward/back/left/right...and if you push the button it switches to up/down. I'm having some trouble getting any accuracy. What about the keyboard function?

The 'standard' X52 config uses the main joystick up/down to tilt the stellar map and the yaw to rotate it. My config uses the hat on the throttle to navigate left/right & up/down (you have a similar switch on throttle left) and one of the rotary throttle controls to do the 3d up/down and the other to zoom in/out. Selection is using the joystick trigger.

I'm not sure if this would work for you unless your throttle is 'locked' to both move as one - although you could map left throttle for 3d up/down and the right for zoom....

Galaxy map navigation using the analogue thumbstick I might try as it isn't used in-game for me currently, that would leave the top hat free to zoom / traverse.... hmm :)
