Does this happen to anyone else? Or is it just me?

  1. See interesting thread topic.
  2. Read original post and the first few replies and think, 'I want to add my opinion to this.'
  3. Keep reading replies to make sure your thought hasn't been covered already.
  4. After a few pages, start scanning rather than reading.
  5. Page after page, slowly forming the opinion, 'I should be doing something useful instead of reading all this.'
  6. Eventually give up.

Yep.

If it's something I feel strongly about I will go ahead and post but put in an apology in case it has been said before.

Still get flamed for it though :(

I generally look at the first few to see where the discussion is going then the last page to see where it's been and the sort of atmosphere that has developed.

But there's always time to stir the pot.

After all, we all join discussions to chat and get new ideas.

If I'd relied upon the press to discover what many are thinking about Jeremy Corbyn for example, I'd have assumed he was an outsider with no chance.

Reading the line of discussion here, in other forums and Facebook, I discover that many others are thinking exactly like me. Hence I've voted for Corbyn.

Yes happens a lot to me. Linear mode being the forum default makes it more difficult to scan a discussion. In a classical threaded Newsreader a post that forked off a subthread gives an indication if you want to follow that train of thought or skip it. The built-in search facility is too simple to offer an alternative. Google works better but searches the whole forum not a particular thread (maybe a Google guru knows a trick for that?).

At the risk of hijacking this promising and potentially stimulating thread, if there are any Google Gurus on here can any tell me why the option to have results filtered by country has disappeared?

It used to be in MORE, then moved to Search Tools.

Now it's gone. I know I can go to Advanced Setting then use a scroll box to get down to United Kingdom, but it's a bother, not to mention annoying.

While it is fascinating to hear that Americans can all the wonderful things we do, it would be nice to be able to search sources I can actually use.

I'm not a guru by any means. But you can try a query like this:

site:https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php "t=177796" "what you're searching for"

This will limit the search to the forum site (don't know if the showthread.php actually makes much difference). The "t=177796" locks down to this thread (you can get it from the url). And then just add whatever other terms you want to look for.

I use this;

"site:forums.frontier.co.uk" followed by the word(s) you're looking for.

A quick test reveals that "arsewipe" returns 0 results whereas "flange" returns 64.

Adding the showthread bit returned slightly fewer results.

I take it we are all just posting on this thread to lengthen it? I had a quick scan of the replies to see if anyone else has said the same as this post.

I think we should post in this thread to lengthen it as well.

Thanks, I tried it and it worked once... sort of (I got less clutter). But after that Google started sending me CAPTCHAs because: "This page checks to see if it's really you sending the requests, and not a robot". :)
Google doesn't like tinkering with the site: operator it seems.
