TM Warthog setups

Hi guys!

I have just started playing Elite: Dangerous, and was instantly hooked. So much so that I have a TM Warthog on the way.

However, after reading the entire joystick thread I have not found a good discussion on how fellow Warthog owners have set up their controls.

First question, is there a default setup for this joystick in ED? Does anyone have a drawing of this showing what is mapped where?

Secondly, do the toggle switches work correctly, or is there some coding/configuration that is needed? In other words, can you toggle landing gear up and down without the button getting out of sync with the status in game?

Finally, any good tips on variations to the default setup that are useful?

Regards
Ben

A quick self-bump (bad start as a forum newbie, I know), as the thread took a while to get approved and ended up hiding away on page 3.

As an additional note, feel free to post pictures of your TM Warthog setup for Elite: Dangerous, would be cool to see the variations on desk/chair mounting!

In case there was any doubt, this is the (hopefully) excellent item in question:

Hi guys!

Try here - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=22379 for starters.

First question, is there a default setup for this joystick in ED? Does anyone have a drawing of this showing what is mapped where?

There is a default, yes, here's an OLD map for you:
Following my husband's (Wrongway) post in the Alpha Forum asking about the default key assignments on the Warthog in Alpha 3.2, I decided to help him map out the defaults and draw some charts up in a similar fashion to the X52 Pro which was posted in another thread.

This is what we have found, hope they are of some help to anyone using the Warthog. If any errors are found, please let me know. :)

I am (we are) using Saitek rudder pedals which we assigned in the key-mapping and that is the only deviation from the fault.

Secondly, do the toggle switches work correctly, or is there some coding/configuration that is needed? In other words, can you toggle landing gear up and down without the button getting out of sync with the status in game?

No, ED sees a pulse when you push on, but nothing on return. You need TARGET to programme them. See MikeTT's thread referenced above.

Finally, any good tips on variations to the default setup that are useful?

Try Mike's thread, and a search on 'warthog'.

Merge a thread, me?

I know, it's not the complete answer to your question... but with the time, I found that all those buttons are getting lost in mind ^^ so the best way I found, in use with my TM Warthog too, was using VA -> Voice Attack... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETrDGTf52Tw

Can be found at VoiceAttack.com ;-)

Thanks Yaffle! For some reason my search did not throw that thread up (although google did, a few minutes too late). Looks like a bit of mucking about in TARGET is required to get the best out of the Warthog ;)

I suggest starting with the default Warthog setup in ED which isn't too bad and customising it. You can try memorise someone else's setup, but what makes sense for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. Even after a few months playing ED I still occasionally tweak a setting here or there.

Toggle switches for things like the gear can be made to work in the Target GUI, but I suggest rather using a button on the throttle or stick so that you can keep "Hands On".

Be sure to get pedals as well if you don't already have them.

Will initially be mapping yaw to one of the hat switches as it seems too weak to be of much use in combat. Thinking something like this:

Hat #1 (on the throttle possibly, easier to use while flying?)
U: Thrust Up
D: Thrust Down
L: Thrust Left
R: Thrust Right

Hat #2 (on the joystick to be able to use at the same time as Hat #1, while docking)
U: Thrust forward
D: Thrust back
L: Yaw Left
R: Yaw Right

Pulsing the hat switches should then give excellent docking control, while normal flying would be handled mainly on the joystick. Not entirely convinced pedals will give me much additional control at this stage.

Here's my basic layout (using Logitech G25 pedals for yaw and a DK2 to look around):

I wasn't to happy with the default layout - I wanted everything that has anything to do with targeting, firing and weapon selection on the stick and everything else on the throttle (plus I needed those music controls ;)).

See if you can get a demo somewhere. There are occasions where I sit back and just steer with my feet while heading towards a station in supercruise.

You certainly can map yaw to one of the hats if you like.

Your choices for strafe on the throttle sound good. You can additionally map the slider on the base of the throttle for gentle up/down movement when landing.

Not only that - I found it to often provide that little extra nudge you need to place a clear hit.

Of course binding it to a hat is an option, but having an analogue axis for it makes the entire experience so much smoother.

That's an interesting arrangement. I have thrusters mapped to the POV2 hat on the back of the throttle and use the slider on the base of the throttle for forward/back thrusters when docking. It's only active in landing mode. I am tempted to try that slider for up and down thrusters for more gentle control when landing. However I find thrusters are needed in fighting and need to be more hands on. Have you got them mapped to a hat as well as the throttle slider or does that come into play in landing mode only. I didn't think you could have something like thrusters mapped to an analogue control and a button/hat at the same time.

Yes it actually works. I have up/down mapped to a hat and the slider mapped too. It's a bit sensitive though, so you only move it a small distance. Most of the time I just the hat though.

I will still give it a try. I am sure sensitivity, especially around the midpoint, could be reduced in TARGET. Still reluctant to use TARGET though. I can't find enough uses to justify using it.

Target isn't essential, but you can do little macros like for example flip a switch to almost immediately apply full pips to shields, and the rest to engines - handy for docking/undocking.

You can do quite a bit in the Target GUI app without having to learn any scripting.

Here is my setup: http://1drv.ms/YXiPrv
The custom.binds file is needed in C:\Users\[Your Name]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings.
Backup up any existing custom.binds file first.

Hi all, maybe I have misunderstood something but the Warthog buttons seem to overlap between the throttle and the stick. In other words button 7 exists on both, and only registers as one button in ED, making mapping rather difficult in game.

Am I doing something wrong? Awesome piece of hardware by the way, really looking forward to getting it all configured! Even FA Off flying is fun now ;)

I've had that issue too - (e.g. the coolie hat on the throttle was registered as the same as the trim hat on the stick). From what I remember, not everyone had that issue though.

Anyway - I solved it by reassigning the duplicate switches/hats to key combinations using target (so basically, ctrl+alt+o is assigned to the throttles coolie hat up etc...).

Works flawlessly now.

Also seems to work as long as you assign stuff in the right order in ED... mighty strange, I am sure it will be sorted in ED soon (although it looks like it is the Warthog causing the issue initially). Enough of us using this setup to make it worth while :)
