To all my fellow truckers, did you know..

Hiya,

You all probably knew this already, but I just found out and thought I'd share.

When Im moving a cargo equal to 80% of all my money (yeah I know its dumb but what can I say, I'm greedy, lazy, and impatient), to a station, Im always affraid there will be pirates (pc) waiting in those 10-15 km between dropping out of hyperdrive and the border of the no-fire zone.

Anywho, I just found out I can turn off flight assist, boost to max, turn on silent running, turn off the engines and glide at max to the stations entrance without even once overheating. Sweet.

Cheers,

That's all well and good and I do it as well but I just found out that the AI can see you even when you are cold.

To prove it, find an UnSigSource with an enemy in it.
Kill them.
Go cold
Wait for them to respawn.

You will be attacked no matter what. I've seen it twice now. Something isn't working quite right yet.

It depends how far away you are from the other ship, if you are within a certain distance, they can still see you even if you don't show up on their scanners.

That's how I've been approaching stations when carrying stolen goods or if I have a bounty.

NPC ships still scan you in silent running.

I'm not sure if it's a bug or a feature but I've been scanned dozens of times while I'm at 0% in silent running waiting for people to exit the station.

but ships are visible way further than scanner picks them up ;)
but nice idea, only problem i see here is unexpected drop from hyperspace or other silent ship doing same and BOOM... :)

I never have, but then I keep moving as well, which may be it....
I'd imagine it's a bug though, it's supposed to stop them targeting you.

Not sure if it's still the same but before beta 1.0 instead of going "silent running" (drops shields, heat starts rising) you could just go to modules and turn off your drives. Your heat sig drops to just about zero. It was essentially the same as silent without the obvious down sides.

Haven't tried it recently but worked pretty well in asteroid fields when bouty hunting.

Tbh ive found it far better to shut down stuff than use silent running .I can keep shields and dont overheat :)

Well, turning off all your systems basically accomplishes the same stuff as silent running, but at the source. Instead of shutting the heat radiators, you stop producing heat. However, as far as I've seen, you keep having a small signature, especially with shields still on.

Also, your ship also has a small heat dissipation ability, even with the radiators shut. So you don't need to power down all your systems if you want to bein silent running for a long period of time.

I think there was a video where they did some testing, and even with everything powered down, you were still more visisble than in silent running, so just powering down everything is not a substitute for silent running, but you will probably have to power down some stuff if you want to remain in silent running for a long period of time.

Thanks for sharing, that's really useful ^^.
Never thought about going silent. I didn't even know you could turn off the engines after a boost and still glide at full speed with flight assist off, that's awesome :D.

Do you mean this test on youtube?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBkP1QaKuBM

if so they actually found the opposite. Silent running was MORE visible on radar. all it does is make you harder to locate and lock on. you are STILL VISIBLE on radar. Turning off ALL modules (except life support) causes the ship to ice over. once in this state you ARE TOTALLY OFF radar. I guess you could BOOST, FA OFF, all modules off, and drift along. This would allow some degree of covert insertions. Ooeer missus!

Add a heatsink ejection to that, and you're golden.

Come out of SC. Boost to max speed, FA Off, hit the Heat Sink button. Under MODULES, disable drives. You'll ice over right away.
