Meh. The Drunks of Sol support anyone willing to pay enough in credits, wine, women, and song.
I'm not a member of the Empire and I hate that you guys allow slavery, but I will join you in this cause. I like how the princess gets stuff done and for that she has earned my respect. I won't stand by while Patreus takes more slaves because of his schemes, and giving the princess some support in doing so is just an added bonus. Count me in.
Therefore, though it goes against the grain, I call upon every true Son and Daughter of the Empire, every free Imperial pilot, to ignore Patreus' requests for mercenary support in "reclaiming" his property from Kui Hsien. Indeed, if you support Arissa de Lavigny and the Emperor's Will for the Succession, I call upon you to actively fight Patreus at every turn. I am aware that taking missions against his factions, or sabotaging missions from his factions, will sour your standing with the Empire itself. For those of you willing to make that sacrifice, I applaud you, but all I ask is for pilots to enter warzones in systems Patreus means to conquer, and destroy as many of his factions' ships as you can get in your sights.
I think that there is a total misunderstanding regarding Empire slavery. Read the context provided in-game, it is not slavery as commonly known historically, but rather a means to restore honor.
The following is my understanding:
On paper it's consensual indentured servitude; a person in debt, rather than defaulting, would willingly sign themselves over to a "slave" agency to work their debt off. Laws govern the ethical treatment of Imperial slaves, and in general it's frowned upon to mistreat them.
In practice that's seemingly only true in core Imperial systems. Mining colonies, factories, etc. all employ vast quantities of slave labor, and they are apparently not treated particularly well, because those systems have lots of "bring me slaves" and "free these slaves" missions to the effect of "I killed all my slaves and need more thx" and "all the slaves got killed pls dont bring more thx" respectively.
I don't personally support the system, but it's not that bad where the law is enforced - it's better than living in squalor and poverty, unable to get back on your feet until you're kidnapped and forced into illegal, unregulated slavery, which is seemingly not uncommon in Federation space.
I too have refused Patreus's call as his methods offend me, but I fear that the very nature of his victims' situation may make it impractical for them to offer any such scheme in their own defense. They simply cannot afford to provide the incentives that would persuade mercenary pilots to fight at their side. Why isn't there a CG for the other side? I want to fight in this war but not on the Senators side......
No, he is not. Patreus is a politician after the Federal style, with no actual agenda beyond putting a crown on his head. What he will do with the Empire should he win the rule of it is anybody's guess. We cannot rely upon him; we cannot trust him, and by allying himself with Aisling, he has shown a dangerous willingness to cater to fed-symps in order to gain support. His only strength is ambition, and once that is satisfied, we will find nothing but weakness in him.
I will never deny that Arissa de Lavigny-Duval, too, is ambitious, but she has more than that alone: she has Tradition. She has the support of Chancellor Blaine, who has been by Hengist's side as he maintained the Empire in the form set by his forefathers; the form that has caused it to prosper, thrive, and grow. And finally, most importantly of all, she has the Emperor's own endorsement upon the legitimacy of her claim.
Arissa is the right choice, and the only legitimate choice, for the Empire.
