To anybody finding it difficult to adjust to the new lighting...

Considering the game has changed the lighting quite profoundly, I would recommend you take a look at your previous Gamma settings for the game from the options and adjust this or even consider your system settings where your RGB range are concerned.

I hear some people saying the game looks much too in your face bright and washed out etc, well those are two things I would recommend taking a look at as a starter point. Just a friendly post incase it is of any help raising awareness to.

My previously elevated gamma setting helped make my Full Range RGB setting look that little bit more bright in the darker areas of Elite, especially bringing out the different background Nebula etc. With this Q4 update it was a bit too much. Stations were much too bright and had a milky pink hue to them. Avatars were a bit too bloomed and had that hue also. Give it a try, incase it is of any help.

I can't say this will do much for the Instagram filter stuff I'm hearing from people, but anyways, try it. Give it time, see what you think.

I for example have calibrated my monitor for all purposes, and to change the overall RGB (if that's what your'e suggesting) for one game is kind of silly.
If FD changes things around, they should include more color options in game (I haven't looked around the game settings for years, haven't had to).
I haven't had to mess with nvidia control panel for a looong time, do you know if it has game specific RGB settings?

Elite Dangerous on Xbox suffered from Black Crush with full RGB set. On PS4 not so much, however still benefitted from a slight gamma tweak.

FD will no doubt make adjustments here to fit the majority player base, but in the meantime changing two simple settings takes seconds if you're planning on playing Elite for a few hours.

So the suggestion still stands for anybody willing to check these two settings out. Gamma settings being in the game itself.

Cheers mate thanks for taking the time to suggest a workaround. trying a few things since i tried to play it. Hasn't worked for me. Its still a headache/eyestrain fest and unplayable. Better luck to everyone else.

My main issue by the end of beta was the white faux leather of the cutter was so glaring I couldn't read the hud. I believe I turned off HDR? I'd have to go see when I get home. That helped quite a bit.

Use a pair of sunglasses when required. I'm loving the lighting, stars so bright that it makes you squint. You can almost feel the heat on your face and the need to break out the factor 50 sunscreen and a cold beer.

What about adaptive TV settings? Black corrector, advanced contrast enhancer, gamma, auto light limiter, clear white and colour spacing settings. I know the new update has exaggerated some of those functions. Such as the wide colour spacing causing too strong a saturation of colour on some text making it illegible. My ship shows "Hostile" at bottom right for instance. That was unreadable. Still doesn't look too clear, but far less saturated and smudged now.

As you say, we shouldn't have to explore all our settings again for one game. There has to be a balance or better options from within the game for calibrating this new look.

Personally I'd just like an option in the settings to turn this on or off. I think this new feature is Frontier's revenge for everyone complaining about beige planets, LOL.

Check the "dynamic output range" in the Nvidia control panel is set to full.
For some stupid reason Nvidia set it to "limited" which is bad for dark games like Elite. You will notice quite a difference.

Interesting, I was going to experiment with Nvidia Inspector settings tonight. I'll try this as soon as I get home.

On my PC this setting is no longer under "Change resolution".
Did they move it?

I've disabled bloom and reduced my interface brightness to 2 and it seems better.

I'm playing on a 4000:1 static contrast display with full-range output and calibrated gamma and brightness.

Something isn't quite right with the game contrast, but overall I think the game looks a bit better after the patch.

I see it alot when I peek into folks streams. Gray space.

I have my contrast set to 2 clicks right from extreme left. The problem I had before the update was that everytime I landed on a surface, the light was diluted to much and the scene was dull. I would have to ramp up the gamma everytime I landed on a moon. No need now. The new lighting has fixed this. Space is black and light on planetary surfaces is automatically set.

OPs fed great advice. Tweak the gamma.

I made changes based on the preview images. Turned my brightness way down and my contrast way up. Now it looks like it did before but way more realistic. The stars, the stations, the planets, the darkness, it's all now superb. If anything the lightning is softer and more theatrical. I went from deeply annoyed to deeply impressed, so keep fiddling until you get it, I'm sure you'll find the right setting. Mine didn't adjust the actual gamma though, just turned brightness down until the sky was close to black and then turned contrast up to see the background stars again. Perfect.
