to anyone that flies an orca, do they do ANYTHING good?

It is slightly worse than the Clipper in terms of tonnage and speed. Unfortunately it is 3x the price.

this is really what I was getting at .. is there any niche that it currently fills? for example, it would be worth it even if it were slightly slower and less tonnage than the clipper, but couldn't be mass locked (alas, that doesn't seem to be the case).

If it just looks nice, is reasonably fast, sounds cool, than great, but I'm not going to waste time on it. But if there's some unrealized potential in it, I'm all over it.

I have one! :)
I use it as an armed transport, the combo of size + speed makes it really good at ramming + you can´t really be stopped from jumping, and I have seen several npc pirates trying to flee from me but they have been unable to, because I have been too close with my big ship. :p

Biggest downer is the short jump range, since it is passenger ship at heart you want to show your future passengers the galaxy, but with that jump range it is a problem.

so that's the question of the day -- for me anyway -- can it be masslocked by just about any other medium ship, or have they fixed that?
It would make a great blockade runner if the only thing that could ML it was a conda ...

* The Orca is as fast as the Clipper. Only the Viper can go faster without boost. Only the Viper and Cobra can boost faster.

Clipper and Cobra have higher boost speed than the Orca. The Viper falls a fair bit short of all three in boost.

Its most popular use is as a griefer ship, for ramming unsuspecting newbies around stations. Hopefully, the 1.3 ramming changes will kill this niche :)

sorry for the ignorance on this, but how long does it take to get the permit for alioth? Unless we have a definitive answer on the mass lock question, the orca --for now-- seems like a ship without a niche. I would still consider getting one if there are thoughts that passenger ferrying may be added in the next update, but not if I need to spend a week grinding missions at alioth.

It took me about six hours gameplay to get the permit doing trade and collection runs for Alioth Independents.

The cockpit in the Orca is really really nice. Just got one today (I've become a collector...). Took it for a spin from Alioth to Jameson Memorial, upgraded components, went by Diso and stocked up on some rares and cruised back to Alioth. Switched back to parked Anaconda. Orca will probably sit in Alioth until there is some missions for it, but I already miss that cockpit.

Just a few delivery runs for Alioth Independents. If you go to 78 Ursae Majoris, at Townshend Hub, there are a lot of missions for them.

As an Orca fly i can say its a nice ship. Its not the best at anything, and worse in some regards, but all round its reasonable. Worst aspect is probably its jump range (18-19LY), but that didn't stop me going out exploring in it, and i'm currently 7000LY from Sol.

I've used it for RES bounty hunting, didn't find it much worse than a vulture for hunting NPCs. The large hardpoint and two mediums means it is a decent killer.

Top speed and boost are where it really shines. Joint second fastest ship in the game, and when you get A thrusters then it turns reasonable well, and it has one of the best yaws in the game, so turning while using yaw gives you a little extra not normally available on ships like the Cobra for example. In this way it makes a good trader as it can outrun most other ships, and from behind, being thin, has a relatively slow profile.

In terms of power, its not lacking, you can kit it out heavily and still have power to spare.

Where it is lacking is the 2 locked module slots (a size 6 and a size 5) which can only take Hull reinforcements or cargo space. However, a QA bod recently said they would add this as an isssue to their internal issues list to be looked at. This leads to the main problem which is it cannot fit a size 6 shield which is required to enable it to have a shield which has an optimal mass less than the ship weighs. So if using for combat, shield cell boosters are a definite consideration.

Additionally, it does have a good hull, as shown by certain players using them to ram.
