To buy and DL now or wait?

Hey everyone! I've been looking into this game and I'm wondering if I should jump right into beta, wait for Beta 2 to come out, or wait for the game to come out? Right now I'm leaning towards the first ones. The thing that worries me is that I'm wondering if I buy it now and start playing, when Beta 2 comes out, will I still be able to play without paying more $$$? Also, not being in the game yet, I don't know how well worth-it the game is right now.

Also, on a side note...how likely do you think it is that E:D is released this year?

Thanks for any and all help!

it will be released 100% this year (gamma for sure and it's full release for backers), as for jumping in, SB1 has enough to keep you busy for weeks and SB2 will have that for months, also it's not pick-and-play game so you will need at least couple of days (but i would say couple weeks) to get comfortable with controls and all options, i mean to use all at your benefit naturally, also i believe this game will never be mastered.

buying into BETA now means you will not have to buy anything except expansions (whenever they come out and they are optional), but you will not have to pay for beta 2 or gamma so welcome commander :)

Buying the Beta now get's you everything up to and including the finished game (they're still aiming for that by the end of this year).

The only things that will cost extra are the big expansions to be released after the full game is out (probably at least a year after), which will include the first person stuff, exploring stations, seamless planetary landings and exploration, etc.

Hey @Pheonix13! Welcome to the forums. I've been playing for a week now, though I was a kickstarter backer from 2012. I am loving this game. It's great.

What I would say is that it is in Beta stage, so that means two important things...

1) you have to be patient, there are glitches and server problems from time to time, so sometimes you may be able to play for a few hours at a time, but other times you may get kicked out, or have freezes / crashes.

2) if you're prepared to put up with 1), then it's great fun, plus you get to hone your skills ready for the release and experience some of the cool content and graphics already (and sound!!!)

3) Bear in mind that any progress in Beta will be wiped from time to time, and won't carry over to the full game on release.

I'd do it if I were you, I haven't regretted it at all, but for some, the problems of beta testing are too much for their patience. Hope that helps, and have fun whatever you do. Hope to see you out there sometime!

Was typing a whole story, only to find out the gentleman above me had it pretty much covered. :)

So yeah, what he (well) said! Its a Beta, but go for it.

Go for it!

Hey Phoenix,

I'm having a blast in SB1, there's enough to keep it interesting - but make sure you are ok with having your progressed wiped out at some point as we move into gamma. There are some bugs, but to be honest in my opinion they are far outweighed by the sheer fun of the as yet incomplete game. I'm extremely pleased I jumped into Standard Beta instead of waiting - if your ok with the above then I would definitely go for it :D

Until the beta 1.04, you don't have too many things to do (
  1. you can fight NPC, but is very very easy
  2. you can trade to make money, but when you undertand what commodoties you have to buy and where you have to sell, the difficulty disappears
  3. you can fight other players, but why try to kill someone without a cause?
  4. you can play as a pirate, trying to steal others' cargo
  5. you can explore the 55 star systems available, but until the "explorers career" won't be available, you won't be able to save any data of what you see, so it's useful only if you want to take a picture with the "Stamp" key of your keyboard
The missions available give you a reward equal to 1/10 of the profit you can make trading and there's only a few mission types (only 4, I think) available until now.
You can't go to a star system to another with every ship of the game (that are 13 for now), because the "jump" ability is still limited and some of them can't jump beyond one system, so if you liked one of those ship, you would be stuck in the same 2 systems.

Frontier Developments, that's working on the game, gives news very rarely, so you can't know when will be released an update, or when new features will be implemented.

It's a great game (the flight and combat systems are great! And also the graphics is beautiful), and I suggest you to buy it the final release for certain, but pay attention to little more critical points of view than those who say "It's a great game, buy it NOW!" (I did it so, and now I don't know what to do, only make money that one day will be erased with the new pase of beta).
You could wait when something new will be released, a beta 2 or similar.

So, good choice ;)

Thanks for the info, everyone!

Is mouse and keyboard or joystick better for this game?
Also, are you able to have multiple ships that you can switch between, or is that not coming out until release?

Thanks again

We don't know when multiple ship will be allowed because, as I said, Frontier don't say anything. Anyway, the best accessory is a Hotas controller (I have a cheap Thrustmaster T.Flight X and do his work perfectly, with only a few keys like the "landing gear deploy" still on the keyboard). I don't find the keyboard alone very funny, anyway.
