Newcomer / Intro To buy or not to buy Hauler

Hi,

I have now about 73.000 credits and I want to buy a Hauler.
Should I buy it right now or wait until I have more Credits so I can outfit it right away? (The hauler costs 52.720 credits)
And which outfitting should i get first? (For trading)

Grtz

If you have enough money to cover the insurance buy it now as the additional cargo space will speed up the upgrade process.

I assume trading is what you are going for? The Hauler is a trading vessel.

I chose bounty hunting and scratched up enough to buy a Viper (142K) and kit it out a bit, by dog-piling police victims at a Resource Extraction Site. With the Viper, I made enough on my first trip back to the RES to almost buy another Viper (128K). Took about an hour of killing Cobras (seemed like every Wanted was a Cobra at this RES). I poured most of the profit back into the craft and tonight I'll go back for more. :)

Hi Toc

The insurance thing lost me at first, so forgive me if this is too "101".....but the insurace is an automatic option you get on ship destruction. If you look on your right hand panel, you will see a re-buy cost for your current ship.......that's the "insurance"....make sure you have at least that much in the bank before you launch.......then if you crash, you can get the same ship back again.

Not enough credits to cover the re-buy? Back to the Sidewinder. :)

Ok, will keep that in mind :)

Should it be upgraded with a new FSD? There's a class 2 E in there and i have enough credits to buy a class 2 D or a Class 2 C. Maybe take one of these or save up to get a better one?

A Hauler was my first ship that I paid for. It's great, swapped out the scanner for extra cargo space, put on a Chaff launcher and Heat sink - made some decent money trading and smuggling. Only just upgraded to an Adder.

Definitely upgrade the FSD

Just don't spend all your money right away. Leave enough to cover insurance and cargo.

I concur. Don't forget that a simple mistake can cause you to lose your ship and its cargo. My advice is to always bank enough credits to pay the ship's buy-back insurance and the cost of two full cargo hold contents. That way you can die spectacularly twice in a row before you're back in the poor house.

Trade and Profit!

The first thing you need to increase is the anount of cargo you can carry. You can get rid of the discovery scanner and put another cargo hold in it's place.
to start with buy stuff that will make you more money on each run and get the bells and whistles later when it is flowing in. You should be looking at 22 tonnes of cargo if memory serves we well.

Try not to forget to always have enough crfedits for the rebuy and cargo. This cannot be repeated enough times.

Run from fights as you will struggle with pretty much anything.

Have fun :)

The A class FSD is only about 160K credits, so with that and putting D class items in your Hauler you can get more jump distance to go with the upgraded cargo. I've fitted my Hauler for exploring and it's a great ship for that too, (currently on the way back from my first trip, out to the Horsehead Nebular) so I can highly recommend getting one.

So I bought the Hauler and swapped the discovery scanner for a 2t Cargo.

Should I save up for a Class A FSD or buy the Class D first? (maybe the Class C)

Also, I'm gonna put in a Chaff Launcher to keep the pirates at a distance, but what about the heat sink, is that usefull?

I always keep a minimum of 10.000 Crds in my bank.

I for one skipped the Hauler and went with an Adder. Slightly more max cargo (22t Hauler/ 26t Adder), bigger fuel tank, more speed. All better for trading without shield and weapons. FSD update and power distribution. But hard to cargo scoop/mining since the hatch is far back under the ship. But since you got The Hauler already... good luck. Will eventually by that too, just to have them all.

Be careful with the chaff launcher; it's only effective against gimballed and turreted weapons, and the pirates might well be using fixed. Since the update, NPCs are much more aggressive and it would serve you well to just run if you are interdicted.

In short, don't get cocky.

Given the limitation of the Hauler, I'd personally suggest an Adder - it has similar cargo capacity, but gives you a single medium hardpoint and two small hardpoints. If you can afford to equip them, you're got much greater potential to look after yourself in combat from the (now inevitable) interdictions by the (now) psychopathic ships that just start firing the moment you're in range.

An Adder can give you 22t with a class 2 shield generator (beware: they're very weak, but they will soak up a few hits before they fold, giving you some extra running away time). Here's a basic loadout.
With the proper shield generator (class 3), your survivability is much better (and upgrades to the shields cost more), although it limits you to 18t of cargo. Here.

Whatever you decide, I'd suggest that the priority upgrade should be your power distributor. With an upgrade there, you will be able to charge your boosts faster. Basically, it will help you to run away.

A "D" rated Hauler with maximum cargo costs 97K CR with a rebuy cost of 4.5K CR and has a respectable range of 16Lyr.

18T of cargo could cost 18-100K depending on what you are trading, so whatever you trade leave 5K in the bank!

An "A" rated FSD costs 160K CR and raises the ship cost to 250K CR and the jump range to 28Lyr, whereas the basic Hauler costs 52K and with upgraded cargo racks (18T) costs 67K CR, so if you've got around 70K then the Hauler is a good bet as it will rapidly pay for its own upgrades.

With that range, 18T of rare goods is easy to acquire and would pay very well (18T x 14,000CR = 252K CR).

The Hauler is a logical upgrade between the Sidewinder and Cobra if you are going by the trading route.
