To Dropship, or not to Dropship..

the dropship has a very special atmosphere in cockpit and sound, well worth it.

in terms of usefullness - it is usefull, till you can finance a python. after that, there is no reason to fly a dropship. but most modules can be transferred to a python. so i recommend to get one, if you have the rank and can't afford a python yet.

I think we tend (as a group) to fall into two camps:

Those who just want technically the best ship for a price [and may add a skew of multipurpose, or combat, or trading etc]

And those who are much more into the role-play, the feel, the soul.

"Top trumps" or "music"?

On the top trumps scale, most people forget the price, because they've done Quince or Ceos or Robigo or some other grind and have too many credits to count. The Python is better but much more expensive.

On the soul side, if you aesthetically like the look of the FDS, if you like the way it flies, if it suits the style of gaming you wish to do where you are imagining the way of life you would be living with an FDS then that's you. You should take it.

After all, perhaps a Zonda beats a Ferrari in "top trumps", but Ferrari still has my soul - the music I prefer, Ferrari may not win the drag race, but it wins the heart. I can't afford either...

Still, with my insane skillz (duff piloting), the drift could be a killer. My FA off experience is limited to more forgiving beasts

that's a nother reason for a dropship. it prepares for flying larger ships in combat (python, conda, corvette etc.), for a rather cheap rebuy. if you like piloting larger ships in combat (not addicted to small and nimble fighters like me) - and you'll find out flying a dropship - the FDS is a great learning tool.

It's a fine ship, it has character and a gritty style.
It deserves game content, like dropping mats or troops in planetary war zones or being used for med evac.

Until then it remains to be my mining ship - it is a very good mining ship.

I say you should at least try it. I intend to buy one, even if I keep them in a shipyard later.

The questions is, ultimately, if you'll like it or not. And this leads to another question: are you after the "best" ship out there or are you looking for having fun?

Dropship is impressive. I run one with 80 tons of cargo space and a nice weapons loadout. It's served me quite well, and is fun to fly.

It just looks like a doorstop.

That is MY question, and while it may ultimately be a very easy one to answer, I just wanted the informed input of any esteemed Commanders out there before I make my choice.
I've only ever heard bad things about it, but I still find my finger hovering over the buy button.
So is there anything you can say, to persuade me yay or nay?
Guidance humbly appreciated.

With the military slots the Dropship now has a useful niche as a heavily shielded/armored transport. Compared to equivalent FAS or FGS builds that might have 32 tons of cargo you can outfit a well-protected dropship carrying 64 tons that still carries a class 6 shield generator and 3 x class 4 SCBs. Essentially the Dropship is now a viable multirole and although it doesn't have the speed and maneuverability of the FAS or the firepower and SLF of the FGS it does fill a useful role as an armored transport that can fight well when necessary. If you think of it like a larger, armored Asp for multirole mission running it actually has a very useful role in the game now. It also has a classic Dropship aesthetic with the high-mounted tail and in some ways looks the best of the FDS/FAS/FGS variants (or at least the most likely to be suited for an atmospheric dropship role).

I've been trying for a couple of weeks now to let go of my Dropship and just fly my Python....

Yeah nah! Not going to happen. While on paper the python smashed the Dropship I just find a big grin on my face when flying the Dropship and it's not too far behind stats wise that I'm willing to change.

the only good thing i can say for dropship is it helped me mine the 500 tons for the engineer. I dropped it as soon as i was done with that, and ive liked the Assault/Gunships much more.
