To Eagle or not?

Just looking for opinions.

I currently have my sidewinder with a pair of gimbaled pulse lasers and am farming creds pretty well. So, go for the eagle or just wait til I earn enough for the Cobra?

Thanks!

Eagle is great to fly. I loved it.
But Cobra is even better.
Two different ships.
You should try both.

So, next question. With the insurance system in this game, how much do you actually need in the bank to fully 'insure' a ship?

Eagle basic rebuy cost is about 2.5k so for your weapons etc... I think you'd probably be safe with 5 to 7k although someone else may know for sure.
A Cobra basic rebuy is 7.5k and with my loadout the rebuy is over 10k.

And my suggestion would be to wait for the Cobra.
The Eagle is a nice ship but you only get one more hard point and it's hull is about as strong as paper.
You know how fast those Federation fighter ships explode once their shields go down ? The Eagle take maybe one or two more shots than those.

Depends what you want to do, if it is fighting then go for the Eagle, if you want the option to do both then the Cobra is fantastic..

That's a tricky one. The Eagle is a little faster and perhaps a little more agile than the Sidewinder so it's a lot of fun to fly.

In theory it's better armed with 3 class 2 hardpoints but some people say the placement is not good for gimballed weapons and if you use all energy weapons, they overheat faster than the Sidewinder.

The other thing to bear in mind is that the Eagle is not as tough as the Sidewinder. If you lose shields in an Eagle things can go very bad , very quickly.

The news about the PB2 wipe also complicates things. If it was going to be a straight wipe back to a Sidewinder and 1000 credits, I'd have told you to go for the Eagle just to give it a try. However, we have been told that in PB2 you will start with a Sidewinder and the equivalent value of credits to your progress so far. This makes it more of a risk.

Whatever you decide, just make sure you have a comfortable amount of funds set aside for insurance. So that's at least 10% of the value of your ship and any upgrades. One last thing, is before you change your ship, make sure you sell any upgrades like your gimballed lasers as you will lose the value otherwise.

I'm still in sidey and wasn't going to consider the Eagle as it seemed to be easy to destroy with poor hull. However, other posters have said that with hull upgrades, it's a lot better. The fact that it's faster, more manoeuvrable and has three hard points means that I'm almost certainly going to upgrade to this ship next. :)

Thanks for the info!

I currently have my sidewinder and it's gimbaled lasers and about 40k in the bank.

I didn't catch the bit about a wipe upcoming, so I'll guess I'll just milk creds until the wipe and go from there.

Again, thanks for the help!

I bought the eagle as i want to test all ships. Didn't regret it.

Upgraded armour certainly helps the Eagle deal with weapons fire, but let me tell you from bitter experience that it's no defence against rocks. If you slide an Eagle -- or indeed several Eagles -- sideways at full lateral thrust into an asteroid, be prepared to do the immediate walk of shame down to the insurance office.

"Oh, here he comes again. Sunk more Eagles than Tiger Woods, this one has."

It also has problems with gimballed weapons due to the mounting position, and laser weapons overheat at an insane rate. I suspect the latter is part of a more general energy bug, because locking down hardpoints seems to excessively cool the ship down too regardless of engine output and I'm almost certain that's been reported elsewhere.

Eagles are ridiculously fast and manoeuvrable, and the sound effects as others have pointed out are phenomenal, but for me with my preference for asteroidal bounty hunting it's just too easy to destroy them on an errant boulder while doing an Obi-Wan through the planetary rings. But if you prefer your combat in open space, or are simply a lot quicker at reacting to the proximity alarm, then you can have a lot of fun in an Eagle.

I like my Eagle, I really do. but I will say that Gimbaled weapons in the two lower slots have a much reduced targeting area as the are set back from the front. basically they cant target anything above the midline of your cockpit window. and the Eagle does suffer from rapidly over heating of Lasers if you mount 3 on it.

My preferred loadout is 2 fixed pulse lasers in the lower area, and a Gimbaled Multi-cannon in the top slot on 2 different fire buttons.

also as has been stated, the Eagle is paper thin, a few solid shots from a cobra, and shields are wiped out.. a few more shots into the armor will spell death or at least a high repair bill . for that fact I never have more than one pip in shields during combat as the best defense is NOT getting shot by way of your superior maneuvering.

Eagles are what all the cool kids fly. I love my eagle, it's so quick and nimble it feels like a proper fighter. That said you really need to upgrade the hull because it is pretty much made of paper. The cobra is brutal when fitted out properly, a real killing machine. It does lack the speed and manoeuvrability of the Eagle but it has 4 hardpoints and plenty of cargo space for some trading if that's your thing.

Personally I enjoyed the Eagle, and it was a pretty good way to get used to using two different types of weapons (2 pulse + 1 cannon) which is pretty essential tactic in bigger ships like the cobra.

Newsletter 28 says: we will automatically gift you credits to the approximate value of your progress to date (including credits and ship, so you will be able to immediately buy your ship again).

So I think now would actually be a good time to try a new ship - if you don't like it, you can then rebuy a different one or go back to the Sidewinder after the reset and keep the money.

Whatever you decide, just make sure you have a comfortable amount of funds set aside for insurance. So that's at least 10% of the value of your ship and any upgrades.

10% is on the low side - the insurance payment seems to be 5% of the ship cost, so that would only cover two lost ships. I'd recommend at least 20%.

...and the Eagle does suffer from rapidly over heating of Lasers if you mount 3 on it.

I've configured my fire group so that one laser is on primary fire, and the other two on secondary fire. That way, I can do harassing shots (to keep enemy shields from recharging) without cooldown issues, and then press both fire buttons once I'm in a good firing position.

But I'd love to be able to sacrifice a cargo slot or two for an improved power plant and shield generator. Hope that's coming in a future version.

Another tip: there's a known bug where buying a ship can sometimes hang and you end up with credits deducted but no new ship. Avoiding busy times when servers are overloaded appears to help.

Eagle has a beautiful aesthetic. It is irresistible in the video of Frontier at E3
