To Games in general...use hand controllers

I used to use google cardboard with RiftCat and then I got an Oculus. One thing that has really stood out to me is the use of the hand controllers in VR games. Using them, with the sensors, you can touch any point in your defined space. This provides so much more oppurtunity than a mouse on a desk. You can flip switches, grab a virtual joystick...virtual mouse, whatever, and now all those controls you've mapped to your joystick could be buttons in a cockpit.
So this works great in VR, but couldnt this work without the HMD on, as well? Make the pointer get smaller the further your hand is away from your body, and now you can flip switches anywhere. Flip a switch, and that keyboard in the cockpit could become active.
After trying a few VR games, this sort of interaction is seems normal, not tough to do.
