Horizons To Horizons or Not

I've been away from Elite after a while and started playing agains after the whole NMS debacle. As it turns out, despite all my      ing about ED, I was in heaven and didn't even knew. Frontier people are god damned saints close to the stuff HG pulled out.

Anyways, I'm deciding if I should buy Horizons or wait a bit and Steam reviews are kinda all over the place.

On one hand, the Engineers update seems to be a must have now, since I've been doing the CG in Arque and master or above I noticed that NPCs really pack a punch now. Also, the changes in 2.2 look promising. I guess the cherry on my spacial topping is the promised features in 2.3, the last feature from Horizons - the day I can share a ship with my friends will be a happy day.

On the other, planetary landings, from what I've seen from the vids, seems boring at best and a complete waste of time at worst. This could be indication that next features could be as bland. Also, the price on the expansion has dropped considerably since launch in my country - something like 40% - and it would be nice to pay as little as possible.

I'd like an honest analysis of what Horizons has done to ED so far and if it's wise to buy the expansion or not.

You are right about the planetary landings they are usually unprofitable compared to life in orbit, planetary surfaces are nicely done though, even on a low spec machine. Planetary content is designed to appeal to explorers mostly and can be fun with friends. It is good content but I rarely bother with it as it's not profitable to traders like me.

Planetary stuff is the most atmospheric. It's the best part of Horizons imo. I wouldn't buy it for RNGengineers, ship fighters and that, but that's just me. I heard that there will be volcanoes soon, guess who'll revisit ED again and seek them out.

I guess planetary landings is down to personal taste. For me, the ability to land on and drive around on planet surfaces is worth the entire cost of Horizons all by itself. I absolutely love it. I love the fact that, any time I'm flying past an interesting looking moon, I can just decide to go down there. I love the handling of the SRV, I think the terrain, settlements and engineer bases all look absolutely stunning, I like racing and base-jumping and canyon running and yes, I even enjoy base assaults and prospecting and finding stuff like crashed ships and derelict SRVs and who knows what else in the future.

My current planetary landing TODO list includes climbing mount Neverest (I've tried and failed twice so far), trying to film some of the competitors taking part in Total Recall 2 (see signature), circumnavigating a small moon, checking out the canyons I've heard about on Chujokimba and Robigo 1B, descending down into the massive craters on Junga 1 and jumping an SRV across the narrow canyons of Ariel.

Other people however (and I'm not judging here AT ALL), see the game in terms of what can be achieved rather than just enjoying the moment. In this respect you might find that planetary landing does not have that much to offer.

Like I say, it's down to personal taste (but a big thumbs up from me).

As always in this sort of post, I'll leave you with a video of a very enjoyable session I had, base jumping with some other commanders from a huge mountain on Njokujinun 1. I hope you don't find it too boring, but if you do then fair enough, perhaps it's just not for you.

i have two accounts, one with, one without horizons.

for me, there are only two aspects i'm missing when i fire up the non-horizons account:

- atmosphere/eyecandy. the planets are very often impressive to land on. i miss doing skimmer missions, or trading at planetary ports - not for the CR and not for the actual gameplay, but for the scenery. i wouldn't take out my non-horizons account exploring for sure.

- engineering ships. it's not, because you need those - it is challenging, but fun to fight the new AI without engineering! but i really like to make up for weaknesses of some ships i love to fly with engineers. on my horizons account i mainly fly a fairly engineered DBE - which is now as manouverable as my non-engineered DBS... with my non-horizons account i feel more restricted in choosing the right ship for the job, instead of building MY ship.

nevertheless i wait for a sale <15 euro of jorizons for my second account.

What do you mean "I EVEN..."? Base assault is the most atmospheric of all the content delivered.

:)

I meant that, aside from all the emergent stuff that I really enjoy, I also enjoy all the builtin stuff that has been provided as explicit planetary landing content (base assaults AND prospecting AND finding stuff like crashed ships and derelict SRVs) that a lot of people seem to think is somewhat lacking. Didn't mean to single out base assaults (which are brilliant fun).

Since Horizons came out I just spend most of my time flying around looking for cool places to visit, flying down to the surface, zooming through canyons... I love it, but it's not profitable and pretty aimless. But for me, personally, Horizons is well worth the money I spent.

If you love exploring you will enjoy Horizons. You can find all kinds of things on planet surfaces from derelict SRVs with bootleg liquor to heavily armed bases that you can assault from the air or the ground. It isn't really profitable unless you do the skimmer missions which can be quite nice sometimes when you have nothing to do and just feel like shooting things. Horizons has also given me some of the best screenshots I have ever had the pleasure of taking.

I'd plain say : go for it, can't really go wrong

Simple reason : it gives you more Options and Gameplay elements. And Engineers to tinker around with your Ships. And stuff to see.
No later than being able to slap upto ~50% more Jumprange onto your Ships, you'll realize how much more the Galaxy opens up. And that's possible with one of the 1st Engineers.

Thanks everyone, specially Turner for the vid.

TBH, I now understand why the PL stuff seems boring to me, and it's because it's oriented towards exploring - which I hate. I mean, I don't have anything against explorers and it's nice that some content was geared to that direction, since I've always felt that there could be more to exploring, it's just it's not for me. Base jumping and some other activities sure do look like fun, but I'm more of a... non-Bodhi type of person (for any young heathens out there that don't understand this, it means that I could never be a surfer). I can only have so much adventure in a set time period, like when you tire of being on the beach and just want to get home. I'll probably go see some mountains but I know that I won't be interested for long. Also, sure, as some have said, it's always nice when you don't have walls in your game, so you can explore if you want to. The freedom here is what really matters.

Anyways, I'm sold. I'll buy it as soon as possible. Thanks again.
