Powerplay To Powerplay or not to Powerplay?

Do you like getting shot at for no apparent reason? That's Power Play. Gives a whole bunch of CMDRs a new reason to shoot at you. o7

Make up your mind - either PowerPlay is being shot at for no apparent reason, or it's being shot at for an apparent reason. It cannot be both.

Powerplay, like others have said is a team game. Get involved with a group and its loads of fun.

Its the only part of the game that forced me to get up at 4am and snipe a preparation with a team working in convoy. Look beyond the exterior as its the people that make it.

Another one for the list :)

Basically, am I going to get any FUN out of it?

I was thinking of signing up to get myself some prismatic shields.
Not entirely convinced they're worth it but that's where the dilemma arises.

If there's actually FUN to be had with Powerplay then I'm up for it.
If, OTOH, it's just going to be another grind, of whatever kind, then I'll give it a miss.

Do I get to take on powerplay-related missions and get unique tasks to complete, or is it just a case of killing stuff (or doing something else over and over) to gain yet another kind of "rank"?

*EDIT*

FWIW, I'm completely neutral in any political stuff.
Don't give a toss who's ruling the galaxy or in charge of any systems etc.
I don't have any burning desire to see the federation/Empire/Alliance ruling the galaxy.
I'm just in it for the yucks.

here's shed loads of fun to be had with PP and plenty of diversity. It very much depends on te power you go for. The one that offers the most open support and diversity that is not one of the big three powers, is teh independent power play group Antal Reddit. The foucs far more on in game stuff like running missions etc (99%) than on empire building (1%). The are also perhaps teh smallest power play player group so everyone knows your name :D

Check our their site and compare it to the other powers and I think you wilkl see what I mean about update diverse game play https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteAntal/ while still doing PP stuffs.

And if you'd rather not, that's fine

I jumped in a few weeks back to try and a few weapons. Decided to go after the rating 5 and the 50 mil bonus per week. I spend about 4-5 hours per week farming combat merits which isn't bad for 50 million..... I have reached rating 5 for about 6 weeks in a row now.....I can tell you that I am about at the end of the line. It is getting extremely repetitive now and this week will probably be my last one.....will go back to wandering around looking for stuff to do.... :)

Like what's been mentioned, PP can be enjoyable when involved with player groups' weekly goals of a power, sort of like an indirect team PvP board game in overall outcomes, where you can choose how much or where you wish to be involved or even choose do your own thing for the power completely independent,... or actively against (traitorous 5C activity). Roleplaying a side in the politics, ideologies, or power struggles also helps with the interest. Of course racking up a bounty undermining or opposing an enemy power can paint a target on your ship, but it can make reasonable sense when you choose to roleplay your pp activities. Besides just the special modules of each power, maintaining a rank 5 pledge has the following respective power's weekly benefits.

Mahon - 50% increase on rare goods profits in controlled/exploited systems.
ALD - 100% increase on bounty payouts in controlled_exploited systems.
Aisling - 100% increase to influence reward in controlled/exploited systems.
Winters - 100% increase to influence reward in controlled/exploited systems.
Hudson - 100% increase on bounty payouts in controlled_exploited systems.
Antal - 100% increase on bounty payouts in controlled_exploited systems.
Patreus - 90% reduction in munitions costs in controlled/exploited systems.
Yong-Rui- 200% increase on exploration data sale in controlled/exploited systems.
Grom - 100% increase to influence gained in controlled/exploited systems.
Torval - 50% increase on rare goods profits in controlled/exploited systems.
Delaine - 100% reduction on fines and bounties in controlled/exploited systems.

@Stealthie,

I'm currently joined under Aisling Duval, for those Prismatic shields of course.
Turns out they're mighty expensive. Lol

But anyhoo, there is no real 'fun' in PowerPlay. I've ranked up to 3 two weeks running (because I lacked the funds to buy my prismatic shields!), Then I forgot to rank up, so I'm at rank 2 now, but with enough merits for rank 3 this tick.

All it seems to involve is either hauling leaflets around, or killing other PowerPlay targets.
I went to Bunda, I think, a Winters Controlled anarchy. And basically just laid waste to anything flying her flag for an hour, cashed in my merits, then went about my usual routine.
It's as if I'm not even in PowerPlay. I can cruise through hostile territory, dock wherever, do whatever.
It's plain pointless.
Except for the shields. I WILL be buying then tomorrow. I will! (I'll probably forget).
Once I've got all the shields I can carry, I'm leaving for another power. I'm basically just Pokémon-ing the PowerPlay modules. I already have about 10 Packhounds in storage, and a few in ships.

Until FD overhaul PowerPlay and make it interesting beyond just getting modules, I'm just going to milk it for them, then leave PowerPlay altogether. (Not that being in it makes much difference to your game)

Make sure you buy enough of the sizes to store you as many as you can. That way when you leave the power you will still have shields for other ships. I was cash rich so I bought 2 of each size all the way up to the highest....

I see comments like this all the time on these forums and, no offense to you but, you are not playing PP. Sure you're pledged and take part in the basic mechanics to maintain whatever rank you want for whatever reason but this is not PP. PP is a team game with team goals carried out by an organized team of cmdrs. You cannot play a team game without being part of a team. You're just kicking a ball in a field all by yourself. Again, no offense, but I really wish people would quit spreading this nonsense.

Sorry!
IMHO, PowerPlay should be playable alone though, I shouldn't have to join a group. I already did that when I joined PowerPlay.
(We could do with some sort of powers chatroom really... In game!)

Most of the mechanics behind PP are kinda obscure, but mostly make a bit of sense once you read in to it.

But it doesn't change the fact there seems to only be two activities to do.
Kill stuff or haul stuff. It feels very basic.
(I'm aware killing and hauling are two of the 3 things to do in ED anyway!) :p
But it doesn't feel particularly engaging.

I'm no developer, but surely they could expand the gameplay a bit to make it feel more interesting. I want to like it. I just don't.
Actual missions would be good.

As people here have already said, it's about being a part of a team. Just make sure it's the right team for you. Consider the variables, the history, and the people. You don't have to be a participant in PowerPlay to be part of a team but in many ways, it does help you clearly define what your after and want to accomplish within the game.

Myself as an example, I was a member of a PowerPlay team but overtime found that I wasn't directly aligned with the people of that team and their practices so I eventually left. We are still friendly, I now coach my own team, and I'm a lot wiser from the experience.

Even if PowerPlay doesn't work out for you for whatever reason, you'll be wiser from the experience.
