To prepare for E:D, if you could only buy one of these 'Immersive Peripherals'...

I adore my rift and I have zero regrets getting it... but that being said, with its low resolution and clunkyy software, unless you really are a VR fanboy I would say rule out the DK2 (but make sure you get your CV1 preorder in on day 1).

Whilst the rift has ruined ED for me on a flat screen, I would say unless you know what you are in for in terms of low resolution etc, I would say if you are buying now that the dk2 can be scrubbed off your list.

you have to put EDTracker onto the list
i got mine this week, completely assembled and it works like a charm, can't imagine the TrackIR is much better

and i got myself 2 new 27" screens, and a 970gtx, because i think i can play with that setup for hours, but not with a Rift, i'm sure it'S nice for short periods, but too limited and gimmicky atm (i guess, haven't tried it yet)

Some sort of head tracking device, absolutely. I bought the TrackIR and it changed the game. Expensive, but well supported, works perfectly, and was up and running within moments.

A HOTAS is necessary - doesn't matter which one. You can play the game without one, you can also do your own dental work. Neither is fun.

VoiceAttack - great piece of fun kit. How much you use it is up to you, but for $8 it's worth it just to play with. The free version is fully featured but only allows limited commands, but for some that might be enough.

I hope this is just the screen and camera and not an actual phone. I’d really not want a phone stuck on my face for any time as it cant be good can it.

I’m starting from scratch apart from my newish 27” ASUS screen that I was force to by after my old screen started playing up. But my old Girl of a system turned ten years old the other day. ( its got the build date on a sticker on the back) so I’m looking forward to a complete new experience with the PC. Rift looks amazing and watched enough twitch of Elite to see Voice Attack just take the experience of you and your ship to a new level.

Honestly the first car company that puts Voice attack in. I can see you buying a car and naming it. From dingo’s example “Haylie set heater to 22c, Haylie heated rear screen”

Most DK2 owners will tell you it's incredible. I'm not most owners (though I do own one) and would advise you to hold off until the consumer version is out. Why? While it is incredibly immersive, the resolution/pixelation is very disappointing. Press your face against a big screen TV - that's the pixel quality you get with the Oculus. Plus, text can and often is hard to read/blurry. The DK2 has enormous potential - but as DB and others have said - it needs to be 4K resolution given how close your face is to the screen. The game is simply much prettier on a regular 1080p monitor. So, my DK2 is unused, and I've ordered an EDTracker instead. That's what I'll use for E: D.

On the joystick front: I have the X52 Pro but have just ordered the Warthog and Saitek Pro Combat pedals. Really wanted something a bit more solid feeling. Have heard amazing things about the Warthog, and in your shoes, that'd be top of my list.

an actual phone is used. if you are concerned about radio waves you could turn on airplane mode.. I just think it would be useful because a) you could get it though your cellphone provider b) you can upgrade it every 2 years and not have to buy a headset that will become obsolete in a couple of years

So long as you have a gamepad or other stick to use, then the choice is Oculus rift. I would vote for a stick/HOTAS over the OR DK2 if you were using kb/mouse.

The rift is just something else. You can wait until the consumer version, but the DK2 is already great for the game. I certainly wouldn't buy the third option if your excuse is you're waiting for OR consumer edition.

I don't think it will hurt to have a backup devkit OR lying around, personally, and you will likely be able to sell them for $100-$150 or so by the time consumer comes around, maybe even more if they stay backordered for the consumer version.

As a dedicated flight simmer I would not fly without TrackIr. In ED it is not such a game changer. Hopefully they will sort it out for release.

I use the Warthog throttle with a Cougar joystick. The joystick's springs and gimbals have been modded with IJ's NXT2 mod with makes them very smooth with no flatspot. It also has a stick extension making it even smoother. Great for WWII and jets, not so great fro WW1. The stock Warthog stick is a bit of a lemon in comparison. If I didn't need so many buttons I would use the old but unbeatable MSFFB2 in conjunction with the Warthog throttle.

I would love to try The Rift but will wait for the commercial release.

TrackNoIR $0 (tracks for face using a webcam, so no need to where a hat, clip or anything on your head)
Voice Commander $8 (Very useful, and you can program complex key sequences. For example, retract hardpoints, boost away, power to systems, charge FSD = escape from combat all with one command)
Simple joystick (MS Sidewinder, thrusters and UI navigation both programmed to the hat switch)

Thanks everyone for the assistance in my decision, your feedback and personal experiences have helped me choose:

My thinking was:
- I want the Oculus Rift SOoOOoOOoOOOooOOoo bad.... But wanted to wait until the release version.
- Headtracking will come with the Oculus Rift, and I have a good headset.
- I've already got three monitors, so that's immersion enough.
- HOTAS will take my mind off the controls, and allow me to focus IN the game...

Thanks everyone for the comments and recommendations based on personal experience! Pretty soon I'll be exited to share my experiences with Elite: Dangerous immersion as well! :)

Snuggs...

Good choice.

You do realise that you could sell a DK2 before CV1 comes out? You'd get most of a year with the best available VR experience and hopefully not lose too much on the deal.
