To the "I don't care about offline, what's the big deal" crowd...

I originally posted this in the Newsletter 49 thread, but I figured I'd post this in its own thread, as I feel it sums up what many of us on this side of the debate feel rather succinctly. Hate on me if you will, but I'm really tired of seeing posts like this, so, well... I answered one. Polite discussion is appreciated - Flaming is not. Now, for the post...

Again my 2 cents, I really don't care about offline mode. I didn't with SimCity and I don't with this. People make way to big of a deal about it, and I'm willing to bet the core gaming audience that will play this game is in the same boat as me; 30-something with good internet access, time, and money to blow. The times have changed and as a person who literally grew up with games and who has his own vision about the future of gaming, online is an absolute necessity for a variety of reasons.

Catch up with the times, or be left behind.

Where to start with this one? Well...

People make way to big of a deal about it

It IS a big deal if it actually prevents you from playing the game at all, which it will for many people.

Wow. I'm an American, proud to be as well, but your viewpoint represents the worst of western thought - That because I have these things, they are commonplace, and thus there is no excuse not to have them, period. Have you ever considered that folks like us are the EXCEPTION, rather than the RULE in this world? I would also argue that, for a game like ED with as international an audience as it has, one has to be particularly mindful that other players may not have the technological advantages we consider commonplace in the states, most notable amongst those advantages being fast, reliable internet access.

The times have changed

For us, maybe. Be grateful they have for us, and understanding that they haven't for others.

online is an absolute necessity for a variety of reasons.

Please, elaborate these absolutely necessary reasons. I seriously doubt their 'absolute necessity'.

Catch up with the times, or be left behind.

And you end off with this little gem. Nice. When you become old and passe, does that mean the next generation can grind you up and turn you into soylent green for the rest of us? Somehow I think you'd have a problem with that...

Have some compassion.

I have a crappy 2mb ADSL line, is / was an alpha backer and I wanted an online option but hey, this is life! Sometimes good things happen, other times things go against you. Just move on and accept the situation, life is too short- way to short for the levels of anger over a game of all things!

False. It will prevent only a negligible fraction of the playerbase from playing. Basically only those who do not have internet access at all. You can play ED on very low bandwidth just fine.

I think people have bigger issues than internet speeds to deal with. Basically, it is like this: if you are worrying about being able to play a computer game, you are privileged and get no sympathy. If you have real problems, you do not even know, nor care, that ED exists. Simple as that.

Have some compassion.

I have no compassion for spoiled children who cry about a game. If it so happens you cannot play this game, feel free to dip into your nearest, readily accessible store of high-tech entertainment for a machine on your desk that is unattainable by the very people you seek to equate yourself with. Sit back in your comfy chair, in your dry, heated, illuminated home and entertain yourself. And stop crying into your cereal bowl.

You do know these 'ooh poor baby' folks are keeping the debate going. If they'd quit saying 'shut up', people might actually shut up.

Jeff - not affected by offline/online debate but has sympathy for people who bought/pledged after checking this was the case.

I don't hate on you and it's obvious that a small group are are upset, I'm just not one of them that's all.

I just assumed that the offline thing wasn't viable long before it was announced, it is an online game. How it could played as is offline is baffling, it would actually be a different game, that quite frankly I wouldn't have the slightest interest in.

If they changed the game to the point that it could be played offline then it really would tank as core components would have to be left out. That just seems so obvious to me.

So a small group may not support the game over this issue, no biggie it'll sell fine. If they caved in over this and had carve back on more content in order to placate the offliners then I would be upset. I'd much rather they spent time on development of actual game play than something I just don't care about.

Of course all this is just opinions and although we like to think our opinions are important, practically speaking they actually aren't.
