Yes, it is. I have many starts of which the 'explorer' one, I'm really having fun with. I just found an amazing system near Sol that has class A drives and all the cargo expansions and tonnes of other goodies. For those interested, visit: V1581 Cygni system - Peary Dock.

Having so much fun and loving this gamma 1.0. Oh, and I destroyed an Imperial Clipper for 12000cr bounty too. Lovely ships, seemed a shame to kill it, but you know how it is. ;)

Hello,
as a kickstarter backer once I choosed which starting option I want to play (pirate for now) how can I restart with a new pilot, and choose explorer per say?
I haven't seen an option for that.

I started in a Cobra Mk III at the founders world with 4000cr and a little cargo, sold the cargo for about 3k and then sold my free Eagle for 40,000, giving me a nice 46-47,000cr to start with.

If you have the option to get the explore ship reward it will come fitted with a intermediate scanner that you can sell for 500,000 credits.

If you crash a ship and can't/won't pay the insurance, do you get the starting Cobra back or is it the Sidewinder?

(Yes, I know you can clear the save and get the Cobra back that way.)

Started in a Cobra at the Founder's World, went for a little jaunt & now I'm back there with 100k in the bank & a slightly upgraded ship. (Shinrarta Dezhra is great for upgrades !) Free Eagle is in storage in the shipyard. :)
Not that I want to make anyone jealous, you understand ? ;)

Theres been lots of talk over the years about if KS backers starting positions are overly advantageous but given how much I've played and helped to test the game I'm gonna be happy starting in a Cobra. :) With that said, I still have a fond place in my heart for the sidey.

The first time you use a headtracker in one and watch a ship pass over head.. wow moment :D And there is a lot to be said for earning everything in game from the simplest of starts.

I maintain that one of the great things about ED is that even the starter ship is fun. It's not like EVE where your first thought is "I need to grind to get out of this box." You can have a blast in the Sidey.

You can indeed :)

Just managed to find an hour to try out Gamma, and was pleased to find that I can still fight with fixed lasers, even if it was a shieldless pirate in a Cobra. Seemed to take ages to take down his hull with lasers though. I was missing the multicannon on the roof.

That's very true, which is why, at least until we find out about a gamma wipe, my mission is to pimp the Sidey to the max ! And hopefully surprise some pirates !! ;-)
