Tod Mcquinn Grade 5??

Hello. Question please. I am new to Engineering and wondering. I've unlocked Tod Mcquinn to Grade 4. I have upgraded my 3 multi-canons to Grade 4 and applied an Experimental Effect to each. However, Grade 5 is locked out. I have all the materials needed to roll the Grade 5 but Tod Mcquinn says something about "working together..." I did all but the Grade 1 upgrades remotely and now back at his shop. How do I unlock the Grade 5 and finish off the multi-cannons? I assume I need to do something to gain Grade 5 REP, but unsure what. I've read a few posts and seems like I just need to hand in some bounties? It doesn't say how much though, or what type. Do I just go to the NAV Beacon and kill a bunch of "WANTED" ships, head back and hand in the those bounties to unlock Grade 5?

Thanks!

Well, you didn't realize that doing them remotely doesn't give you any rep with the engineer. You shouldn't use remote engineering until you reach grade 5 access with the engineer.

You'll just have to do some more upgrades on other modules, but do them at his station, until you have grade 5.

Oh man, seriously? I don't have any modules to upgrade with him. All I have are the multi-cannons and I've already got them to Grade 4. I tried to do another engineer to the multi-cannons but I get a BIG RED X stating that it's going to undo what I've done. Am I just SOL on Grade 5 with him now, unless I want to undo stuff I've done? There's no other way to gain the REP I need, other than engineering my multi-cannons with some other function? I am going to need to grind back to where I was if I do that. Also, so I should always DO the engineering with the Engineer? I thought the remote way was just FDEV throwing us a less of a grind bone, no? I guess the only other thing I can do is buy a frag cannon, or something else he works on, and upgrade that? I am lost. No way to just hand in bounties? Please?! :)

Bounties won't help. The Bounties are just the key to unlocking his door in the first place. Once inside, you have to keep trading mats for work until you reach G5. You don;t have to trash your progress, just buy another MC and upgrade it at his shop. You'll find a use for it in the future. Just store it and fit it to another ship.
In answer to your other question, I always engineer at the engineer's base as you have ready access to the experimental effects, which pinning blueprints doesn't have. I never pin until I have reached G5. Pinning early slows down your progress through the engineers - not just with McQuinn for example, but also with unlocking the next tier of engineers. Until you G5, you may not get a reference for access to the next engineer.

Ok, thank you! I actually have another ship with multi-cannons that have just Grade 1 with Tod, so I guess, I can go get that ship and upgrade those cannons some more. That should do it, to get me to Grade 5? Sounds easy enough. A little more material gathering but such is life in ED... Thanks!

Once you have G5 access to an engineer there is no a priori reason not to do remote engineering. It will save you quite a bit of travel. As any engineer that does any grade of the blueprint will be able to slap the experimental on, the number of engineers you need to visit will be lower. The typical example is FSD and thrusters, which will be the prime candidates for engineering on almost any ship. Since Palin does G5 thrusters and G3 FSD, you can remote engineer both and then have Palin put the experimental on them. This can save you from a trip to Farseer and so in.

Knowledge of new engineers is given half-way through grade 3.

Thank you for the info, very helpful. One more question please, I have another ship but I have also upgrade the multi-cannons to G4 with Tod, so my question is... I am about to buy something I can upgrade with him, but does it need to be the same type I've been upgrading, another multi-cannon, or anything weapon he does to G5 will be OK? Thanks again!

Thanks. I bought a Rail Gun to, hopefully engineer up enough to open the G5 on my Multi-Cannons. I hope it's just upgrading this one Rail Run though... :( Thanks!
