[Suggestion] about the NPC database.
If I may make a suggestion, based on the evidence above, could this be added in as a paid for Game Extra?
I'm going through a similar situation as the OP with my own father and would have liked to add my Dad and maybe a few extra family members in the game.

Thank you for posting this, it gives me some hope.
My brother died in 2010. We used to play Elite together - well, taking turns. We talked many times about how good it would be to be able to play together. Largely this was in order to find out who would win in a dog-fight (a common kind of argument for siblings).
So when the option came up for an NPC name, it had to put him in there. I have not managed to find him yet, I know the chances are against it really, but this is encouraging! I am not sure that I want to find out who could win now though...

Wonderful story.
I was lucky enough to be in a position to "buy" a station for my late Dad during the Kickstarter, as he bought me my first computer (a Commodore 64) and Elite for it.

I wish i had seen the kickstarter earlier so i could have put a few names out there in space as well, although if i met them i would probably just break down.
