Today's friendly fire incident...

I hop out of Supercruise at one of Kremainn 2's resource extraction sites. I'm flying around for a couple of minutes before I find authority vessels plinking a wanted Anaconda with a 91k bounty. Okay... I line up behind him and prepare to run circles around him for an easy bounty. I target his powerplant, wait a few seconds to make sure there's no friendly vessels in my immediate line of fire, and open up. A second or two later, an authority vessel somewhere below me inexplicably noses up in a steep turn and crosses directly into my line of fire, almost colliding into me. I plink him with one of my pulse lasers for a 200 credit bounty because I have virtually no time whatsoever to react, and suddenly, the vast majority of authority vessels in the area are targeting me and ignoring their original target.

So, I'm trying to kill the Anaconda for the bounty while attempting to evade four or so Eagles and Vipers. I manage to get his powerplant down to ~38%, but I have to leave the engagement after eventually suffering over 70% hull damage in my Cobra after a protracted series of strafing runs. The entire time, I'm being hit by at least one Federation fighter with enough speed and maneuverability to keep consistent damage on me, which isn't helped by the Anaconda's turrets that hit me regardless of my facing relative to him.

The funny thing about the fine/bounty system is, it works a bit differently for NPCs.
When NPCs target my mark and accidentally hit me, they are not reported as wanted ships,
allthough the option is checked. They have to target you and then deal damage to get a bounty.

All you can do is to keep an eye on the scanner on zooming in ships.

Yup, the IFF in this game is really out of whack. I hope they'll soon turn accidental stray shots into a matter of a fine rather than a bounty.

I made a post regarding this in the gameplay and features forum. The response from the feds should adjust based on either damage done, amount of hits, or a certain bounty/fine amount reached.

We should be receiving warnings along with fines until it reaches a level where they can finally see it as a threat. Not an immediate death sentence .
