Today's Rant: Military Ranking

So, I'm tired. I had to work late last night, and early this morning.
I NEED SLEEP!

But, I can't, so I shall rant at you all instead. Lol

My rant is about military ranking. It's silly.

I've been working my way to the Corvette for some time, in a manner I assume FD would call "as intended". Basically doing the missions that take my fancy, and not doing data delivery spamming at Sothis.

Anyhoo, without using Sothis*, I went from no rank in the Federation, to 65% Post Captain. It's taken me almost two years, of just doing missions as I please.
Nothing particularly wrong with that actually.

However!
After running 6 combat related missions which took almost 2 hours, I went from 65% to.....

*Drum roll*

66%...

In a moment of weakness, I decided I'd done my share of work, and flew my DBX out to Sothis.
Within 30 minutes, I'd gone from 66% to 78%, just delivering data to Ceos.

So, the rant.

Why aren't Deliveroo riders using Apache gunships? I mean, they've delivered pizza to people, so obviously, must be entitled to buying one of these mighty warships to deliver more pizza in. :p

Also, why does data influence rank so much faster than actual military based missions?
Spending an hour killing stuff for the major powers earns almost no rank compared to delivering a report.
:p

Also, does anyone leave Sothis with more money than they went in?
I docked with 351m CR. I left with 341m CR. Lol

* I visited Sothis once before, to see the fuss, and got bored after just 2 runs,
and left. Lol

I'm not very good at ranting.

On the question of Sothis, I went there last night to rank up to petty officer so I can get the Sol permit (I feel dirty as I am an Imperial cmdr through and through, but needs must and all that!), I logged out at 100% Midshipman after starting at none a few hours before, so one more navy mission tonight and I will have reached my goal. I might carry on until Chief Petty Officer so I could buy a FAS if it ever took my fancy.

Anyhow, I took my Python filled up with passenger cabins (32 jumps to get there from my home system of Cubeo!) and have been doing the runs to the Sirius Atmospherics nav beacon as well as data delivery between the 2 systems, I am about 7-8 mil down on what I started with. No worries though as I hear Rhea still pays half decent credits for passenger missions so will probably head there afterwards and top myself back up with a couple of hundred mil.

Every other thread is a whine about the credit grind for a cutter or similar, and I'm just sat here thinking...If ya actually played the game, you might know credits are the least of your concerns.

Luckily I'd be shocked if this isn't visited next season. FD have, iirc, admitted the current system is lacking. Here's to naval ranking having anything to do with the navy.

So much this! The game is full of the weirdest (or most half-baked) design decisions. The major problem is not even that everything takes forever and can be cumbersome beyond belief without third party tools or exploits, but that so much simply makes no sense at all. I mean you can get promoted to whatever, Admiral, for hauling a ton of biowaste to a system 3ly away.

it would make to much sense if combat related stuff, gets you the "best" combat ship..

same as trading slaves, should get you a cutter, cause its the best at it... or something like that..

There is an awful lot of grind whining going on. Credits are easy to come by. I have 341m without even trying, just by doing missions for rank.

My only problem, is it feels completely backwards that data delivery missions earn more rank than a kill 108 ship mission.
Especially since you can stack 20 data missions, and be done in 5 minutes.
But if you stack kill missions, you need to kill that many targets, and that can take hours.
But earns you less rank. (But more money).

Not complaining about stacking either. It's just, IMHO, mission rep rewards need to be balanced better.
A kill 108 mission should reward far more rank than a kill 8 mission. And a kill 8 mission should reward more rank than a data delivery.

Basically the game needs a better risk/time investment Vs reward system, for money, rep and influence.

If you've got a Sol permit, I can highly recommend paying a visit to the Daedalus station. Thanks to another CMDR's recommendation, I've spent a few hours staging from there, running (well-paying) missions to Wolf 424. Decent payouts, and good rank % increase, as all factions are Fed-aligned.

After a few hours of mission-running, I'm 30% higher as Post-Captain, and a hundred mill better off.

Edit : just logged in, and found no missions to Wolf 424 at all... easy come, easy go lol.

I guess my one question to add to this topic is why did they bother adding the ranks Vice Admiral and Admiral when there is nothing to be gained from it? What kind of crazy person would sadistically try to reach the rank of Admiral with no reward?

It should unlock the Farragut Battle Cruiser lol.

Lol StiTch - I just read this as "get your sothis Navel rank now before FD mess it up even more than it already is".

It is definitely annoying that ranking is basically "do an arbitrary number of missions regardless of type or quality".

That structure is inherently frustrating over anything more than trivial durations, and the duration of the corvette grind is anything but trivial. In the fed line especially it also leads to a high rate of personality clash: to unlock a line of combat-focused ships you have to play Data Courier Simulator, which is likely the opposite of what you want to do if you're pursuing those ships.

I think there is now further variability in mission spawning. I've encountered the same issue. One trip, you may find more than 20 missions, another they can barely eke out 10, without any variation in state, etc.

Why is the window on the toilet of an aeroplane frosted out, who is going to look in at 30,000 feet?

There are people who fly. Apparently there's a knack to it, but it involves falling towards the ground and forgetting to hit it. A distraction is meant to help with the forgetting part. I've tried it, but, I can't get the hang of it. Last time, I broke a few ribs, but alcohol may have been involved, and the distraction wasn't enough.

Looks like progress to me. Last time I tried I was playing frequently couple of hours and always trying to mix in some Fed jobs. I got about the same progress in a month playing that way.

I gave up after >6mnths at 100% Lieutenant (Federation ranking) and flew everywhere searching. Decided I'd had enough of the game after 2-3yrs anyway. I keep popping back for an hour or so, but its still the same. The frustration of some of the foibles in ED just got the better of me. I have the lifetimes thing, so I may just have a look now and again, but this issue killed the game for me as I cannot proceed further. Besides I'd reached Elite. Havent played properly now for 8mnths since. Good luck to everyone else.

Knowledge is power. You can do more damage with a little bit of knowledge that others don't know about, than with most military hardware... :)
