Newcomer / Intro Todd Mcquinn too far away

Relatively new commander here. I got aessage from Tod, who I know has some deal with turning in bounties to him to get him as a weapons engineer.
However, theessage expires in 24 days for me. I would like to get there before then, yet it's much to far with no feasable short range jump routes.
I'm in a Viper MkIII with the standard 3E FSD and 2C fuel tank.
Anyone have suggestions, I don't play near enough to reliably find and apply the upgrades I'll need to get there in a reasonable time. I know the bookmark for him won't expire, but I'd like to arrive sooner rather than later.

Yup,
The invitations from engineers are "anytime" invites. Without an invitation the engineer base doesn't show on the maps.

It's only the message in your inbox that will expire.
Check the right-hand panel and you'll find one option for Engineers. This will show you your status with the engineer, the location, and anything else you need to unlock third skills (think bribe)

I guess I never addressed your question about range, but upgrading the Frameshift Drive (FSD) will increase your jump range. You have the E class, which is the lowest. See if you can find a C class one, that’s the next one price-wise, and it will help a lot. You can also get D class (lightest) or A class (best but most costly). B class for an FSD is ok , but heavy and not really a great choice. Still better than E.

Have fun.

You can find any information you need in this case in out-of-game databases and websites. For your concrete case, the information about which system you are in at the moment and how much spare moeney you have would be crucial.

You could fit a 3A (for example) FSD in your Viper, or you could get a Hauler instead of that Viper and equip it with a 2A FSD for the trip. I wouldn't recommend the Hauler for collecting the bounties, though :D.

Added: if you want to know the main external tools, just give a shout. It's just that some people decide that they don't want them.

That is the time that the message will remain available for you to read the invitation from Tod will not expire.

The most urgent thing for you to do is replace as many E rated core modules with D rated or better as soon as possible the FSD ideally should be an A rated unit however don't fit smaller (number) units until you are building some kind of extreme build.

The E rated modules are heavy and their only saving grace is they are cheap which is only useful when you are selling the ship.

If you're wanting to cash your bounties before you take the trip to see McQuinn, or blow your bounty money on some decent drives so you can get out there, you could do a lot worse than just flying there and collecting the bounties nearer to him.

Ross 129 is 14.7ly away (2 jumps in an unengineered, A-rated viper) and has rings for days, all in easy reach of a coriolis station at Yang Hub. I still use that system for testing loadouts when I've been to visit him.

Asa, try getting your hands on a cobra Mk4 and giving and upgrading it with a rudimentary mining build for void opals (guides can be found all over for them) then get a diamondback explorer. Upgrade it's power plant, and frame shift drive to A's. Everything else in core internals to D class. That should give you roughly 39 ly's of jump range and allow you to easily reach all of the engineers.
Good luck commander.

This ship is not available to anyone who didn't pre-support the Horizons expansion three or four years ago now.
