"Toggle" VR?

I've had the Oculus since December but haven't tried it yet in ED. I know I have to reinstall the game via the Oculus software, but once I've done that - can I toggle between playing with VR and playing without it, or would I have to reinstall again to play without VR again?

If you already own ED you don't need to reinstall it through Oculus software just enable it within the ED setup screens.. Some say it is actually better than installing it via Oculus with your serial key available with your ED purchase. So just continue using your normal launcher and Oculus will take over...

My Oculus software starts every time I try to play ED in 2d on my monitor.. so I merely quit the Oculus app when this happens but wish there was another easy way/option to stop Oculus firing up when playing 2d.

Toggle VR would be great (-:

Good question. It sure is confusing. I have three instances of ED installed. I started on Steam. Then I got the Rift and installed it in there. Then I thought I might have performance problems so downloaded it again ("Commander" edition from FD) to run outside. Right, when I fire up standalone ED it starts the Oculus s/w.

You can toggle the mode, 2D or 3D, inside the ED game itself. Go to Main-Menu>Options>Graphics>VR. Turn it off and click Apply, and it immediately goes into 2D. Change it to HMD and you get immediately get 3D. You don't have to reinstall or even quit the game.

The only wrinkle is that if it starts up in 3D, you have to put the Rift on to enable changing it to 2D.

or disconnect the Rift before launch of ED on desktop

a pain but it works if you want to play ED 2d

Toggle VR would be a better option IMHO

Have a search on the forums for Dr Kai's ED Profiler.

This lets you set up different profiles to start ED in, for example monitor or VR.

I have to admit, I never got it to work, although many people swear by it, but basically I always play ED using the rift, and if I want to do something on the monitor I simply go to the graphics setting and turn off the HMD under 3D...

Ah thank you all! Yeah my Oculus software also starts when I launch the game, but I read about Elite VR that I had to uninstall it and install it in the Oculus software to be able to use it, but that is great news. Thank ya'll!

If you have it though Steam you can simply go to your library and press play. It will give you the option to play it normally or through VR, then it will play it through the oculus.

There are several ways of approaching this but the most user-friendly is to use Oculus Tray Tool

The method I use is to have the Oculus VR Runtime Service set to Manual startup and then have ED Profiler run a batch file to start or stop the service depending on whether I am selecting a VR or 2D profile. I also have taskbar buttons to start/stop the service so that I can override at any time.
